Most adults with depression take fluoxetine 20 mg once a day, and the dose depends on the condition.

Key takeaways Fluoxetine 20 mg once a day in the morning is the usual starting dose for adults with depression and OCD, and trials found it enough for most people with depression. The dose can rise after several weeks if needed, up to 80 mg a day; panic disorder starts at 10 mg and bulimia uses 60 mg. In 100 r/prozac threads, 20 mg was the dose people named most often, followed by 40 mg and 10 mg. The label says the full effect can take 4 weeks or longer for depression and 5 weeks or longer for OCD, so a dose is judged after that.

Fluoxetine 20 mg once a day is the usual Prozac dose for adults with depression and OCD. The FDA label starts most adults at 20 mg in the morning and allows increases up to 80 mg a day. Panic disorder starts lower, at 10 mg, and bulimia uses 60 mg.
What is the usual starting dose of Prozac?
It depends on the condition, and for depression the starting dose is often the one people stay on: in trials comparing 20, 40 and 60 mg, 20 mg was enough for most. For panic disorder the label starts at 10 mg for a week, then 20 mg. For bulimia the target dose is 60 mg, which some people reach over several days.
Condition Starting dose Range in the label Depression 20 mg 20 to 80 mg OCD 20 mg 20 to 60 mg recommended, up to 80 mg Panic disorder 10 mg 10 to 60 mg studied Bulimia 60 mg 60 mg studied Depression, children 10 or 20 mg 10 to 20 mg in trials OCD, children 10 mg 20 to 60 mg; 20 to 30 mg in smaller children
The label says the full effect can take 4 weeks or longer for depression and 5 weeks or longer for OCD, and suggests considering an increase only after several weeks. For OCD, 80 mg is a ceiling that was well tolerated in open studies, not the target. In lower weight children, 10 mg may be both the starting and the target dose for depression; for OCD in adolescents and higher weight children, the dose goes to 20 mg after 2 weeks. The label asks for a lower or less frequent dose for older adults, people with liver problems, and people with other illnesses or on several medications.
How is a Prozac dose increased? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
The label sets no fixed steps. It says to consider an increase after several weeks if improvement isn't enough, up to 80 mg a day. Doses above 20 mg can be taken once in the morning or split between morning and noon. The weeks after an increase need watching. MedlinePlus says the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior is higher in children, teenagers and adults up to 24, especially early in treatment and when the dose goes up. New or worse anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, trouble sleeping or thoughts of self-harm after an increase are a reason to call your prescriber the same day, not at the next visit. The clinical view on what a dose means:
Whether a dose is low or high depends on the medication's usual range and on you.
The same dose can be a starting dose for one person and a full dose for another. Age, individual conditions, other medications and how your body processes the drug all play a part.
Doses usually start low and rise in steps, to keep early side effects manageable. A dose goes up when there has been time to judge the response and the benefit is not enough.
For depression, a moderate dose of many antidepressants works about as well as a higher one, with fewer side effects. Some conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, often need doses near the top of the range.
Going above the maximum in the prescribing information is a specialist decision. Changing your dose on your own, or taking extra on a bad day, can bring side effects or withdrawal. ## Why does a Prozac dose change take weeks to show?
Fluoxetine acts on serotonin from the first dose, but two slower things follow. Blood levels take 4 to 5 weeks to level off, because fluoxetine and its active breakdown product, norfluoxetine, leave the body slowly: fluoxetine's half-life is 4 to 6 days with daily use, and norfluoxetine's 4 to 16 days. The label warns that a dose change is not fully reflected in the blood for several weeks. The felt benefit can come later still, so a new dose is usually given a month or more before it is judged.
What dose 303 people on r/prozac said they take
We read 100 recent threads about Prozac doses on r/prozac, comments included. People who struggle with a dose are more likely to post, so treat this as a range of experiences, not how often each dose is prescribed. 383 people wrote about their own dose, and 303 of them named it as a number: 20 mg was the most common, with 40 mg and 10 mg close behind.
Daily dose Of 303 people 10 mg 75 20 mg 95 30 mg 16 40 mg 81 60 mg 15 80 mg 11
The rest named rarer doses, among them 3 at 100 mg, which is more than the label maximum of 80 mg and not a dose to reach on your own.
143 people said their dose had been raised at some point. Of them, 51 said what happened next: 18 felt better, 12 felt worse at first and then better, 19 felt worse and 2 noticed no difference. The side effect most often linked to an increase was a rise in anxiety, named by 26 of the 143.
One person on r/prozac wrote:
My anxiety did not get better until 40 mg, now it’s gone.
Is fluoxetine 20 mg a lot?
No. 20 mg is at the low end of the label's range. People end up on more when there has been too little benefit after several weeks, or for OCD, which often needs doses near the top of the range. That decision is your prescriber's, and it rests on how you feel, not the number.
Is 10 mg of Prozac enough?
For adults with depression or OCD, 10 mg is less than the label's starting dose of 20 mg. For panic disorder it is the dose for the first week, before 20 mg, and in lower weight children it can be the full dose. The NHS says doctors may start with a lower dose and raise it after 3 or 4 weeks. Whether it is enough for you is your prescriber's call.
What should you ask your prescriber about your Prozac dose?
Dose decisions are easier with a clear account of how the current dose is going. Note how you feel on the dose you take now and for how long, before asking about a change. It helps to ask or tell them:
how many weeks you have been on the current dose which symptoms have improved and which have not which side effects you have, and whether they started after an increase whether a split dose or a different time of day would suit you what the plan is if the next dose doesn't help
When the time comes to stop, the dose is lowered gradually rather than stopped at once. What that feels like is covered on the page on Prozac withdrawal .
Download on the App Store A new Prozac dose takes weeks to settle, so changes in sleep, energy and mood are easy to misread day to day. The withClaro app lets you log mood, sleep, energy and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions What if I take too much Prozac? The NHS says an extra dose of fluoxetine can be dangerous and to get urgent advice if you have taken more than prescribed. In the US, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 if someone has collapsed or has trouble breathing, as MedlinePlus advises.
Does Prozac come as a liquid? Yes. The NHS lists capsules, tablets, tablets that dissolve in water, and a liquid. Ask your pharmacist if swallowing capsules is hard for you.
What if I miss a dose of Prozac? The NHS says to take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due, and never to double up. Set a reminder to keep doses regular.
