Key takeaways Effexor XR usually starts at 75 mg once a day, or at 37.5 mg for 4 to 7 days first. For depression and generalized anxiety, the maximum in the label is 225 mg a day; for social anxiety, 75 mg. Capsules are taken once a day with food and swallowed whole, or sprinkled on applesauce. Of 218 people on r/Effexor who named their dose, 150 mg and 75 mg were the most common; only 29 said how an increase went, and 14 of them felt better while 9 felt worse.

The usual Effexor dosage is 75 mg of venlafaxine XR once a day with food. The FDA label allows starting at 37.5 mg for 4 to 7 days so the body can adjust. This page is about the once-a-day XR capsules; if you take Effexor tablets twice a day, the label gives 37.5 mg twice a day as the match for 75 mg of XR once a day. For depression and generalized anxiety, the dose can rise up to 225 mg a day.
What is the usual Effexor dosage?
The label gives a starting dose and a maximum for each use: 75 mg a day is the usual start for depression, generalized anxiety and social anxiety, panic disorder starts at 37.5 mg for a week, and the top is 225 mg except for social anxiety, where it stays at 75 mg. Capsules come in 37.5 mg, 75 mg and 150 mg.
Condition Usual dose Maximum Depression 75 mg 225 mg Generalized anxiety 75 mg 225 mg Social anxiety 75 mg 75 mg Panic disorder 75 mg, after 7 days at 37.5 mg 225 mg
For depression and generalized anxiety, the label spaces increases of up to 75 mg at least 4 days apart, and for panic disorder at least 7 days; MedlinePlus puts it as no more often than every 4 to 7 days. In the trials that set these doses, increases were made at intervals of 2 weeks or more, a better guide to how long to give a dose than the 4-day minimum.
Higher isn't automatically better. For social anxiety the label found no extra benefit above 75 mg, and for generalized anxiety and panic disorder it could not clearly show that higher doses work better; in one anxiety trial, 75 mg worked more consistently than 150 mg. A dose goes up when the current one isn't helping enough.
Kidney and liver problems lower the ceiling. The label cuts the daily dose by 25% to 50% for mild or moderate kidney problems and by 50% or more on dialysis or with severe kidney problems; for liver problems, by 50% when mild or moderate and by 50% or more when severe or with cirrhosis.
Is your Effexor dose low or high? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
75 mg is the usual starting dose, 150 mg sits in the middle of the range for depression and generalized anxiety, and 225 mg is the top of it. The clinical view:
Whether a dose is low or high depends on the medication's usual range and on you.
The same dose can be a starting dose for one person and a full dose for another. Age, individual conditions, other medications and how your body processes the drug all play a part.
Doses usually start low and rise in steps, to keep early side effects manageable. A dose goes up when there has been time to judge the response and the benefit is not enough.
Going above the maximum in the prescribing information is a specialist decision. Changing your dose on your own, or taking extra on a bad day, can bring side effects or withdrawal. When the dose goes up, a few things are worth watching. First, if you are under 24: MedlinePlus warns that the risk of suicidal thoughts is higher in children, teenagers and young adults, especially in the first months and when the dose is increased. New or worse anxiety, agitation, trouble sleeping or thoughts of self-harm after an increase are a reason to call your prescriber right away. If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123. Elsewhere, find a crisis line near you .
Second, blood pressure. The label reports dose-related rises, which is why prescribers check it. A 1998 analysis of 3,744 people found small rises in diastolic pressure during early treatment, a clinically significant rise mainly above 300 mg a day, and more lasting rises than on placebo with continued treatment.
How should you take Effexor XR?
Take it once a day with food, in the morning or evening, at about the same time each day. Swallow the capsule whole; do not divide, crush or chew it. You can also open it and sprinkle the beads on a spoonful of applesauce, swallow without chewing, then drink a glass of water so nothing is left behind.
What dose 218 people on r/Effexor said they take
We read 100 recent threads on r/Effexor, comments included, and 299 people wrote about their own dose. These are their own accounts, and people who notice a big change are more likely to post, so treat this as a range of experiences. Of the 75 who said their dose had been raised, 29 said what happened next: 14 felt better, 9 felt worse, 4 felt worse at first and then better, and 2 noticed no difference.
Of the 299, 218 named their current dose, and 150 mg and 75 mg were the most common, with 37.5 mg and 225 mg next:
Daily dose Of 218 people 37.5 mg 28 75 mg 59 112.5 mg 9 150 mg 61 225 mg 22 300 mg 8 Had stopped, 0 mg 9
The rest named less common doses, and answers ran up to 300 mg and beyond, more than the label's usual maximum. One person on r/Effexor wrote:
Im on 150mg because I felt like 75 wasnt doing it for me in terms of depression and especially anxiety
What should you ask your prescriber about your Effexor dose?
Dose decisions are easier with a clear account of how the current dose is going. Note how you feel on your dose now, and for how long, before asking about a change. It helps to ask or tell them:
how long you have been on the current dose which symptoms have improved and which have not side effects since the last change, including sweating and sleep your blood pressure, since it can rise with the dose what the plan is if the next dose doesn't help
When the time comes to stop, the label asks for a gradual reduction. More on that in Effexor withdrawal .
Download on the App Store A new Effexor dose can change sleep, energy and anxiety within days. The withClaro app lets you log mood, sleep, energy and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Can Effexor be taken above 225 mg? The XR label's usual maximum is 225 mg a day. Some people on r/Effexor named 300 mg or more; that is a specialist decision, and blood pressure needs checking at higher doses.
Is 37.5 mg of Effexor a real dose? It's a starting dose in the label for some people and for panic disorder. Ask your prescriber about your target.
Can you open Effexor XR capsules? Yes, the label allows sprinkling the beads on applesauce. Swallow them right away without chewing.
What if I miss a dose of Effexor? MedlinePlus says to take it when you remember unless the next dose is close, and never to take two together. Venlafaxine leaves the body quickly, with a half-life of about 5 hours and 11 for its active form, so a missed dose can be felt soon; tell your prescriber if that happens often.
