How long does Effexor take to work, according to studies?
A 1998 analysis of two placebo-controlled depression trials of venlafaxine looked at the first two weeks. A clear early response showed up in 27% and 20% of people on venlafaxine, against 9% and 2% on placebo. The early response lasted to the end of both trials. The 1998 trials raised the dose fast, to at least 200 mg a day in the first week.
The FDA label does not give a timeline for benefit. It notes that drug levels reach a steady state within three days. MedlinePlus, the US National Library of Medicine guide, says the full benefit may take several weeks or longer.
The effect builds gradually, so the first shifts are small and easy to miss. Note them, even when they seem minor.
How long does it take for Effexor to work for anxiety?
Effexor XR is FDA-approved for generalized anxiety, social anxiety and panic disorder, as well as depression. A 2019 analysis of 57 anxiety trials looked at SNRIs, the class Effexor belongs to, as a group. They brought most of their benefit in the first weeks of treatment, with smaller gains later. SSRIs such as Lexapro improved at a steadier pace. The 2019 analysis found no significant difference in how well the two classes worked.
A brief rise in anxiety at the start is common and can hide early progress. What matters is the direction. If the anxiety keeps building instead of coming and going, contact your prescriber before your next appointment.

What does it feel like when Effexor starts working?
On Effexor, the first thing many people feel is a side effect rather than relief. In the FDA trials, 30% of adults on Effexor XR had nausea, against 11.8% on placebo. Trouble sleeping affected 17.8%, against 9.5%.
Antidepressants often start to help within one to two weeks, but the full effect takes several weeks, and side effects often show up first.
Sleep, appetite or energy may improve first. The lift in mood usually comes later, and the full effect later still. This is why the first weeks can feel like a step backward.
With some antidepressants, a short rise in anxiety or restlessness at the start is common and usually settles. If it is hard to manage, your prescriber may lower the starting dose or change the time of day.
Early signs of progress are often small, and other people may notice them first. Getting out of bed gets easier, you spend less time on the same worries, and old interests come back.
Talk to your prescriber about the dose or a different medication if:
nothing has improved after about four weeks at a steady dose side effects are hard to live with
New or worse thoughts of suicide or self-harm in the first weeks, especially in people under 25, need a call to your prescriber the same day. If you feel you might act on them, call 988 or 911 now.

Does a higher dose make Effexor work faster?
Not clearly. The FDA label starts most adults at 75 mg a day, and some at 37.5 mg for four to seven days. It allows increases no sooner than every four days, and MedlinePlus says no more often than once every 4 to 7 days. In the trials that showed Effexor works, the dose went up no more often than every two weeks. So the label allows faster steps than those trials tested.
For anxiety, a higher dose does not seem to bring more benefit. In generalized anxiety, the label reports no clear link between dose and effect from 75 to 225 mg a day. For social anxiety, it reports no evidence that higher doses add benefit. The 2019 anxiety analysis found the same for SNRIs as a class. In depression, a 2019 analysis found the benefit of venlafaxine rose up to about 75 to 150 mg a day.
Your prescriber sets the dose and when to raise it. Effexor can also raise blood pressure, so the label advises regular checks.
When should you talk to your prescriber if Effexor isn't working?
Bring a short record of the weeks so far: when you started, the dose, what changed and what did not. Go sooner if side effects are too much. Notes from those weeks show your prescriber more than a single bad day. It helps to tell them:
When you started Effexor, your dose and any dose changes. What, if anything, has improved, even a little. Which side effects you have had, and whether they're easing. Whether anxiety rose at the start and whether it has settled. Any missed doses, since gaps on Effexor can bring withdrawal symptoms.

Tracking your first weeks on Effexor
A hard day can hide a good week, and memory tends to keep the bad days. A daily record shows the trend: which side effects are fading and whether sleep or anxiety has started to shift.
Download on the App Store Early changes on Effexor are small and easy to miss from one day to the next. The withClaro app lets you log mood, energy, sleep and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Can Effexor work in the first week? Some people notice small changes in the first week or two, often in sleep or anxiety. Most need several weeks for a clear effect. Keep taking it as prescribed and note any change.
What time of day should I take Effexor? MedlinePlus advises taking the extended-release capsule once a day with food, in the morning or the evening. Keep to about the same time each day. If it keeps you awake, ask your prescriber whether to move it to the morning.
What happens if you miss a dose of Effexor? The FDA label advises against stopping Effexor abruptly, and gaps in dosing can bring withdrawal symptoms. Take your doses at about the same time each day, and ask your pharmacist what to do if you miss one.
Does Effexor work better for anxiety or depression? It is approved for both, and studies of SNRIs show benefit for anxiety disorders. Which matters more for you is worth telling your prescriber, since it can guide the dose.
