Key takeaways The FDA label says withdrawal symptoms grow more likely with higher doses and longer use, and asks for a gradual taper. Effexor has a short half-life, so symptoms can start soon after a missed dose. On r/Effexor, brain zaps and nausea or flu-like feelings were named most; of the 74 people who said how bad it was, 42 called it severe. Plan any stop with your prescriber; the label says some people need to come off over several months.

Effexor (venlafaxine) withdrawal is common and can be hard. The FDA label says stopping or lowering the dose can bring new symptoms, more often at higher doses and after longer use. It lists dizziness, nausea, headache, insomnia, anxiety, nightmares and shock-like sensations among them, and asks for a gradual reduction. Those shock-like sensations are what people call brain zaps: brief jolts that feel like electricity in the head, usually after a cut or a missed dose; the Royal College of Psychiatrists describes them as electricity-like sensations.
What 295 people on r/Effexor said about stopping Effexor
Brain zaps and nausea or flu-like feelings came up most, and of the 74 people who said how bad it was, 42 called it severe. We read 100 recent threads about stopping Effexor on r/Effexor, comments included, and 295 people described their own experience of stopping or cutting down. People with a hard time are more likely to post, so treat this as a range of experiences rather than odds. Of the 295, 131 said how they stopped: 75 tapered over a month or more, 19 over less than a month, and 37 stopped all at once.
Another 38 of the 295 said they had no symptoms or barely any. The table counts symptoms against all 295 people, and one person could name several:
Symptom people named Of all 295 people Brain zaps 49 Nausea or flu-like feeling 47 Low mood or crying 35 Dizziness 29 Sleep problems or vivid dreams 25 Irritability or anger 23
Of the 74 who described how bad it was, 42 called it severe, 31 mild and 1 moderate. And 187 said where they ended up: 93 were still tapering, 42 were off but still struggling, 35 were off and doing fine, and 17 went back on. One person on r/Effexor wrote:
Even doing it slowly like this, I was getting brain zaps and the like
Another had an easier time:
I haven’t had any crazy withdrawal symptoms yet
How long does Effexor withdrawal last?
It ranges widely. On r/Effexor, of 79 people who gave a length, the middle answer was about 2 weeks, but answers ran from a day to two years. Half of the 187 who said where they ended up, 93, were still tapering, so for many the end isn't in sight yet. The label says some people need to come off over several months.
Why is Effexor withdrawal so hard for some people?
The label says withdrawal is more likely at higher doses and after longer use, which is part of why it hits some people harder. For everyone, levels fall quickly: venlafaxine has a half-life of about 5 hours, and its active form about 11 hours. Immediate-release tablets are taken two or three times a day, so levels dip faster between doses than with the once-daily XR capsule. The label also reports serious, long-lasting withdrawal after the drug went on sale.
What happens if you miss a dose of Effexor?
Because of the short half-life, some people feel withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, nausea or brain zaps within a day of a missed dose. MedlinePlus says to take the missed dose when you remember, skip it if the next dose is nearly due, and never take two at once. If missed doses keep making you unwell, tell your prescriber.
Is it withdrawal or is depression coming back?
Timing and the type of symptom usually tell them apart. Withdrawal tends to start within hours to days of a cut or missed dose, often with physical symptoms such as brain zaps, dizziness or flu-like feelings, and prescribers take quick relief after going back to the previous dose as a sign of withdrawal; that step is theirs to decide. Depression returning usually builds more slowly, over weeks, with low mood rather than physical symptoms; the Royal College of Psychiatrists says a return after weeks or months is most likely the original condition. Tell your prescriber when it started relative to your last change.
Some changes need urgent help. The label reports suicidal thoughts, aggression and suicide in people while lowering or stopping Effexor XR. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or others during a taper, contact your prescriber the same day. What should you tell your prescriber before stopping Effexor? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
Plan the stop with your prescriber before you cut a dose, including what to do if symptoms come. The clinical view:
Stopping an antidepressant gradually, with your prescriber, lowers the risk of withdrawal symptoms.
When a dose is cut or stopped, the brain has to adjust. That adjustment can cause withdrawal, also called discontinuation symptoms, such as dizziness, brain zaps, nausea, poor sleep and irritability.
For many people symptoms are mild and pass within a couple of weeks. For others they are severe or last for months, and there is no reliable way to know in advance, although longer use, higher doses, medications that leave the body quickly and withdrawal on a past attempt all raise the risk. Stopping all at once carries the highest risk. If symptoms during a reduction are hard to bear, the label says the prescriber may consider going back to the previous dose and then reducing more gradually.
It helps to tell them:
Why you want to stop, and how long you have been on Effexor. Your current dose, and whether it's XR or tablets. Whether you have had withdrawal or a relapse before. Whether you have missed doses and how that felt. Big events coming up, such as exams, travel or a new job.

Frequently asked questions Can you stop Effexor cold turkey? The label asks for a gradual reduction. Plan the stop with your prescriber.
Can a slower taper help with Effexor withdrawal? Often, yes: the label says the pace may need to be set for each person and some people need several months. In its trials the dose dropped by 75 mg each week; the pace and the steps for you are a decision with your prescriber.
Why do I feel sick after missing one Effexor dose? Venlafaxine leaves the body quickly, with a half-life of about 5 hours, so levels drop within a day. Take it when you remember unless the next dose is nearly due, and never double up.
Can stopping Effexor raise blood pressure? The label notes reports of higher blood pressure after stopping or lowering the dose. Tell your prescriber.
