Prozac Withdrawal: Symptoms, Timing and Why It Can Start Late
Prozac withdrawal is often milder than with other SSRIs because fluoxetine leaves the body slowly, but it still happens, and it can start weeks after the last dose.

Key takeaways Prozac withdrawal tends to start later than with other SSRIs, because fluoxetine and its breakdown product stay in the body for weeks; the label says this slow fall may lower the risk, but some people still have a hard time. The FDA label lists dizziness, electric-shock sensations, irritability, anxiety, headache and poor sleep among discontinuation symptoms. On r/prozac, people who said how long withdrawal lasted most often said about 3 weeks, but some said months, and anxiety was the symptom named most often. Stop only with your prescriber, gradually; the label recommends a gradual reduction whenever possible.

How did stopping Prozac go for people on r/prozac? What are the symptoms of Prozac withdrawal? When does Prozac withdrawal start? How long does Prozac withdrawal last? Is it withdrawal or is depression coming back? Can you stop Prozac cold turkey? What should you tell your prescriber before stopping Prozac?
Prozac (fluoxetine) withdrawal is symptoms that can follow stopping or sharply cutting the dose after taking it daily for several weeks, and it usually starts later than with shorter-acting SSRIs. With daily use, fluoxetine's half-life is 4 to 6 days, and that of its active breakdown product, norfluoxetine, 4 to 16 days. That long tail means symptoms can appear a week or more after the last dose. The label says the gradual fall in levels may lower the risk of withdrawal, but it still recommends a gradual reduction whenever possible, and some people have severe or long symptoms.
How did stopping Prozac go for people on r/prozac?
We read 100 recent threads about stopping Prozac on r/prozac, comments included, and 141 people described stopping or cutting their own dose. People who struggle are more likely to post, so these numbers show what withdrawal looks like when it happens, not how often. Of 85 who said where they ended up, 37 were off Prozac but still struggling and 8 were off and doing fine; 20 had gone back on it and 20 were still cutting down. Of the 57 who said how they stopped, 43 went cold turkey, often after missed doses.
Of the 141, 72 described their symptoms, and one person could name several:
Symptom they named Of 72 people Anxiety or panic 21 Brain zaps 14 Headache 13 Irritability or anger 11 Low mood or crying 11
Another 16 said they had no symptoms or only mild ones.
One person on r/prozac wrote:
I had the worst rebound anxiety ever
Another had a middling time:
a few headaches and mild mood swings
And some had none:
I didn’t have any withdrawal symptoms
What are the symptoms of Prozac withdrawal? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
The FDA label lists reports of low or unstable mood, irritability, agitation, dizziness, electric-shock sensations, anxiety, confusion, headache, tiredness, insomnia and hypomania after stopping SSRIs, particularly when stopped abruptly. It says these are generally self-limiting but that serious discontinuation symptoms have been reported. The clinical view:
Stopping an antidepressant gradually, with your prescriber, lowers the risk of withdrawal symptoms.
When a dose is cut or stopped, the brain has to adjust. That adjustment can cause withdrawal, also called discontinuation symptoms, such as dizziness, brain zaps, nausea, poor sleep and irritability.
For many people symptoms are mild and pass within a couple of weeks. For others they are severe or last for months, and there is no reliable way to know in advance, although longer use, higher doses, medications that leave the body quickly and withdrawal on a past attempt all raise the risk. Stopping all at once carries the highest risk.
Withdrawal and a return of depression can feel alike, and the difference changes what you do next. If symptoms are hard to bear, the label says the prescriber may consider going back to the previous dose and then reducing more gradually. That is your prescriber's call.
When does Prozac withdrawal start?
Later than with most SSRIs. The label says fluoxetine and norfluoxetine stay in the body for weeks, so levels fall over weeks rather than days. Symptoms can start a week or more after a cut, which makes it easy to miss the link to the medication.
The label also says to wait at least 5 weeks after stopping Prozac before starting an MAOI antidepressant, a sign of how long it stays in the body.
How long does Prozac withdrawal last?
On r/prozac, of 40 people who said how long their symptoms lasted, the typical answer was about 3 weeks, and a few single stories ran much longer. Your prescriber can't tell in advance how long it will be for you either. Count from the day of your last cut and note each symptom and how strong it is, so you and your prescriber can see whether it is easing.
Is it withdrawal or is depression coming back?
With Prozac the timing makes this harder than with other SSRIs: the label notes that a dose change is not fully reflected in the blood for several weeks, so withdrawal may not show until well after a cut. Tell your prescriber what you feel and when it started relative to your last cut, since the answer changes the plan.
Can you stop Prozac cold turkey?
The label recommends a gradual reduction whenever possible. The NHS says not to stop suddenly and that your doctor will reduce the dose gradually over several weeks or months. The long half-life softens a sudden stop, but the label still recommends reducing gradually.
What should you tell your prescriber before stopping Prozac?
Tell your prescriber why you want to stop, and talk through timing: the NHS says your doctor may suggest stopping if you've been feeling better for some time. With Prozac the pace is often slow, so it helps to plan for weeks or months. It helps to tell them:
How long you have taken Prozac and your current dose. What happened when you missed doses or cut down before. Whether your mood has been steady for several months. What support you have if symptoms come back. Any other medications you take or plan to start.
Low mood during withdrawal can turn into thoughts of harming yourself; tell your prescriber the same day. If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123. Elsewhere, find a crisis line near you .
Open the fluoxetine taper calculator Withdrawal from Prozac can start late and come in waves, so a daily record helps tell it from a return of symptoms. The withClaro taper calculator builds a gradual plan for fluoxetine to discuss with your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions When should withdrawal symptoms worry me? If they stop you working or sleeping, keep getting worse, or come with thoughts of harming yourself, contact your prescriber rather than waiting them out.
Is Prozac self-tapering? Its long half-life makes levels fall slowly, but that is not the same as a planned taper. Follow your prescriber's plan.
Do brain zaps happen with Prozac? They can. The label lists electric-shock sensations among discontinuation symptoms. Tell your prescriber if you get them.
Can missing a dose of Prozac cause withdrawal? Fluoxetine leaves the body slowly, so one missed dose changes levels little. On r/prozac, many who stopped cold turkey said it started with missed doses, so keep doses regular.
