Prozac With Wellbutrin, Adderall or Ibuprofen: What to Know
Prozac is often combined with Wellbutrin on purpose, a stimulant needs closer watching, and some medications are ruled out.

Key takeaways Never combine Prozac with an MAOI antidepressant, pimozide or thioridazine; MAOIs and thioridazine also need a 5-week gap after the last Prozac dose. Prozac with Wellbutrin is a common combination that prescribers use on purpose, but bupropion can raise fluoxetine levels. Adderall and other amphetamines raise the risk of serotonin syndrome with Prozac, and ibuprofen raises the risk of bleeding. About half the people on r/prozac who described a combination named Wellbutrin.

Prozac (fluoxetine) can be taken with Wellbutrin (bupropion), and prescribers often combine them on purpose. Other combinations need more care: the label warns about amphetamines such as Adderall and about pain relievers such as ibuprofen. Because fluoxetine stays in the body for weeks, its effect on other drugs lasts too. A few combinations are ruled out completely: the label says not to use Prozac with MAOI antidepressants, pimozide or thioridazine.
What 195 people on Reddit said about combining Prozac
We read 100 recent threads on r/prozac about taking Prozac with another medication, comments included, and 195 people described a combination they take or took themselves. People who post tend to have a strong experience, good or bad, so treat this as a range rather than odds. Wellbutrin was the medication combined with Prozac most, named by 102 of 195, about half, with stimulants next. Some named more than one:

Of the 88 who said how the combination went, 54 said it helped, 18 had mixed results, 3 noticed no difference and 13 said it made things worse or they stopped the added medication. One person on r/prozac wrote:
We added Wellbutrin which has helped with the daytime fatigue
What should you never take with Prozac?
The label rules out a few combinations completely, and because fluoxetine leaves the body slowly, some need a gap of weeks after the last dose.
Medication With Prozac Gap needed MAOI antidepressants Never 5 weeks after the last Prozac dose; 14 days after an MAOI before starting Prozac Thioridazine Never 5 weeks after the last Prozac dose Pimozide Never No gap set in the label
Why does Prozac interact with so many drugs?
Fluoxetine blocks CYP2D6, an enzyme that breaks down many medications, so it can raise their levels. Bupropion blocks the same enzyme, so with Wellbutrin it raises fluoxetine levels, and a third medication broken down by CYP2D6 can be raised by both. Its effect also lasts after Prozac is stopped. Fluoxetine's half-life is 4 to 6 days with daily use, and its active breakdown product, norfluoxetine, takes 4 to 16 days, which is where the weeks-long gaps come from: for tricyclic antidepressants, the label says the effect can last 3 weeks or longer. More on how long it stays in Prozac withdrawal .
Can you take Prozac with Wellbutrin?
Yes, under a prescriber's care. Bupropion works differently from SSRIs and is a common add-on, often to offset tiredness or sexual side effects. The Wellbutrin XL label says bupropion can raise the levels of fluoxetine, so a lower fluoxetine dose may be needed. It also asks for extreme caution when bupropion is combined with other drugs that lower the seizure threshold, antidepressants among them, and for a low starting dose of bupropion raised gradually. The Wellbutrin XL label rules it out for people with a seizure disorder, with a current or past eating disorder such as bulimia or anorexia, and for people abruptly stopping alcohol or benzodiazepines. Your prescriber checks this before adding it.
Can you take Prozac with Adderall? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
Sometimes, but it needs monitoring. The label lists amphetamines among the drugs that raise the risk of serotonin syndrome with Prozac. People with ADHD and depression are sometimes prescribed both, under a prescriber's watch. The clinical view, including the signs of serotonin syndrome:
Antidepressants are often combined with other medications on purpose, but some combinations raise the risk of serotonin syndrome or bleeding.
Prescribers add a second medication when one is not enough, or to help with sleep or anxiety. They weigh the benefit against the extra risk.
Serotonin syndrome usually appears within hours of starting a medication or raising a dose. Mild signs include restlessness, sweating, shivering, diarrhea, a fast heartbeat and twitching muscles. High fever, rigid muscles, confusion or seizures need emergency care.
Combinations that need care include:
two antidepressants together some pain medications, such as tramadol, meperidine and methadone, and to a much lesser degree triptans for migraine St. John's wort, and recreational drugs such as MDMA anti-inflammatory pain relievers such as ibuprofen and naproxen, and blood thinners such as aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin or apixaban, which can raise the risk of bleeding. Do not stop a prescribed blood thinner without advice.
Tell your prescriber and pharmacist about everything you take, including supplements. Starting or stopping one of them can change how the others work. ## Can you take ibuprofen with Prozac?
It can be, but the combination raises the risk of bleeding. The label says SSRIs raise the risk of bleeding and that aspirin, other NSAIDs and warfarin can add to it. If you take a blood thinner or have had stomach ulcers or bleeding, ask before using ibuprofen at all. If you need a pain reliever for more than a few days, ask a pharmacist which one suits you.
What should you tell your prescriber before combining medications?
Mention it even after stopping Prozac, since it lasts for weeks. It helps to tell them:
Every prescription medication and its dose, including ones from other doctors. Pain relievers, allergy pills and sleep aids you take, even occasionally. Supplements such as St. John's wort, tryptophan or 5-HTP. Any blood thinner, or a history of bleeding problems or seizures. When you last took Prozac, if you have stopped.
Download on the App Store When a second medication is added to Prozac, changes in sleep, energy and mood can come from either one. The withClaro app lets you log mood, sleep, energy and side effects each day, linked to your doses, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions How long after stopping Prozac can I start an MAOI? At least 5 weeks, the label says. Your prescriber plans any such switch.
Is acetaminophen a safer pain reliever on Prozac? The label's bleeding warning names aspirin and other NSAIDs, not acetaminophen. Check with a pharmacist before using any pain reliever regularly.
Does Prozac raise the level of Xanax? Yes. The label says fluoxetine can raise alprazolam levels and slow reactions further. Take both only as prescribed, and ask your prescriber about driving and alcohol.
Do supplements interact with Prozac? Some do, such as St. John's wort and tryptophan. Tell your prescriber and pharmacist about any supplement you take.
