Wellbutrin Interactions: SSRIs, Stimulants and Other Medicines
Wellbutrin is often taken with an SSRI or an ADHD stimulant. It raises levels of some medicines and adds to seizure risk with others.

Key takeaways Bupropion blocks the liver enzyme CYP2D6, so it can raise levels of some antidepressants, including fluoxetine and sertraline. Medicines that lower the seizure threshold add to Wellbutrin's seizure risk. It must not be taken with MAOI antidepressants or within 14 days of one, or together with another bupropion product such as Zyban. In 100 r/bupropion threads, ADHD stimulants and other antidepressants were the medicines people named most often alongside Wellbutrin.

Wellbutrin (bupropion) interacts with other medicines in two main ways. It blocks the liver enzyme CYP2D6, which raises levels of medicines that rely on it, and it lowers the seizure threshold. It must not be combined with MAOI antidepressants.
What 111 people on r/bupropion take with Wellbutrin
We read 100 recent threads about combinations on r/bupropion, comments included, and 117 people described their own experience. These are people's own accounts, not how often anything happens, and people who found a combination that works are more likely to share it. Of the 117, 111 named another medication; ADHD stimulants came up most, then a second antidepressant. The table shows the five most common:
Taken with Wellbutrin Of 111 people ADHD stimulant 45 Another antidepressant 30 Buspirone 7 Hydroxyzine 4 Pain reliever 4
Of the 117, 58 said how the combination went: 41 said better, 7 mixed, 8 worse or stopped, and 2 noticed no difference. One person on r/bupropion wrote:
Honestly, adding Concerta was the best thing I could've done.
Which medicines interact with Wellbutrin?
The label names these groups:
Group What happens Examples Other bupropion products not to be taken together; the doses add up, and so does seizure risk Zyban (for quitting smoking), Wellbutrin SR, Aplenzin, Forfivo XL MAOIs not within 14 days; risk of a blood pressure crisis phenelzine, tranylcypromine, also linezolid and IV methylene blue Medicines processed by CYP2D6 levels rise, the dose may need lowering venlafaxine, paroxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline, some antipsychotics and beta-blockers Medicines that make seizures easier add to seizure risk antipsychotics, tricyclic antidepressants, theophylline, steroids Parkinson's medicines restlessness, tremor, dizziness levodopa, amantadine Tamoxifen may work less well tamoxifen
The CYP2D6 effect lasts at least 7 days after the last dose of bupropion. The only medicine measured in people is desipramine, whose exposure rose about fivefold; for the others the label says the combination has not been formally studied. With a nicotine patch, blood pressure is the thing to watch: in a quit-smoking trial, 6.1% of people on bupropion plus the patch developed high blood pressure.
Citalopram is a separate case. It does not rely mainly on CYP2D6, yet in one study bupropion raised its peak level by 30% and its total exposure by 40%. Bupropion can also cause a false-positive urine test for amphetamines, which is worth knowing if you are tested at work or in hospital.
The most serious rule is about stopping other things. Bupropion must not be taken by someone abruptly stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates or antiepileptic drugs, because seizure risk rises sharply. If you plan to stop any of these, tell your prescriber first.
What does the label say about Wellbutrin and ADHD stimulants?
The label does not forbid the combination, but it lists misuse of stimulants among the conditions that raise seizure risk. Many people take both under a prescriber's care. Bupropion can also raise blood pressure, more so with other drugs that boost noradrenaline or dopamine, and stimulants are among them. The label asks for blood pressure checks before and during treatment.
What about Wellbutrin and an SSRI? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
Prescribers often add Wellbutrin to an SSRI when the SSRI alone isn't enough. In the 2006 STAR*D trial, 565 people whose depression had not gone into remission on citalopram were randomly assigned to add sustained-release bupropion or buspirone. About 3 in 10 reached remission on either, and fewer stopped bupropion because of side effects (12.5% against 20.6%). That trial added it to citalopram, not to SSRIs in general.
Two things matter with the combination. Bupropion raises levels of some SSRIs, such as paroxetine, fluoxetine and sertraline, so their dose may need lowering. Both drugs together can also lower the seizure threshold further. Bupropion does not act on serotonin itself, so serotonin syndrome is less of a concern than with two serotonin drugs. The clinical view:
Prescribers add a second medication when one is not enough, or to help with sleep or anxiety. They weigh the benefit against the extra risk.
Tell your prescriber and pharmacist about everything you take, including supplements. Starting or stopping one of them can change how the others work. More on Prozac with Wellbutrin and Lexapro with Wellbutrin .
What should you tell your prescriber about other medications?
Bupropion is not prescribed to people with a seizure disorder, or with anorexia or bulimia now or in the past, the label says. Tell your prescriber and pharmacist about everything you take, including over-the-counter medicines and supplements. It helps to tell them:
All prescription medicines, with doses. ADHD medication, and any stimulant you use. Over-the-counter medicines and supplements. Alcohol and recreational drugs. Any seizure, head injury or eating disorder, now or in the past. Any other medicine containing bupropion, such as Zyban. Any plan to stop alcohol, sleeping pills or seizure medicine.
If you have a seizure, stop taking Wellbutrin and do not take it again, the label says, and call 911 in the US, 999 in the UK or your local emergency number. If you get a severe headache, chest pain or a pounding heartbeat on the combination, call your prescriber that day, because these can mean high blood pressure.
Download on the App Store When two medications start or change together, it is hard to tell which one is doing what. The withClaro app lets you log mood, sleep and side effects each day, linked to your doses, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Can you take Wellbutrin with Zoloft? Bupropion can raise sertraline levels, so bring both doses to your appointment and ask whether the sertraline dose needs changing.
Can Wellbutrin cause a false-positive drug test? Yes. The label says bupropion can cause a false-positive urine screening test for amphetamines, even after stopping it. If you are tested, say you take bupropion and ask for a confirmatory test.
Is Wellbutrin an MAOI? No, but it must not be taken with an MAOI or within 14 days of one, and the label adds linezolid and IV methylene blue to that rule. If you have taken an MAOI recently, tell your prescriber the date of your last dose.
Can I take ibuprofen with Wellbutrin? The label doesn't list ibuprofen as an interaction. If you also take an SSRI, ask your pharmacist, because SSRIs with ibuprofen can raise the risk of bleeding.
