Key takeaways The FDA label gives Wellbutrin XL once a day in the morning, with or without food. Insomnia is a common side effect, and MedlinePlus advises not taking bupropion too close to bedtime. In 93 r/bupropion threads, 59 of the 99 people who said when they take it took it in the morning, and 37 at night. Some people on r/bupropion moved their dose to night because of daytime sleepiness; the label's time is the morning, so a change is one to agree with your prescriber.

When 99 people on r/bupropion take Wellbutrin Why does the label say morning? What should you ask your prescriber before changing the time?
Wellbutrin morning or night? Take Wellbutrin XL (bupropion) in the morning: that is what the FDA label says, with or without food. The label does not give the reason. MedlinePlus does: if you have trouble sleeping, do not take bupropion too close to bedtime. Insomnia is one of its common side effects. This is about Wellbutrin XL, taken once a day; SR and immediate-release tablets are taken more often, and the schedule on your own label is the one to follow.
When 99 people on r/bupropion take Wellbutrin
We read 93 recent threads about when to take it on r/bupropion, comments included, and 176 people described their own routine. These are people's own accounts, not how often anything happens, and people who found a fix are more likely to post it. Of the 176, 99 said when they take it:
When they take it Of 99 people Morning 59 Night 37 Afternoon 3
Across all 176, 41 gave a reason for their timing: daytime sleepiness came up most (18 people), then insomnia or vivid dreams (12). One person can give more than one reason. Of the 176, 19 had moved their dose, 16 of them from morning to night. Of the 14 who said whether moving it helped, all said it did; nobody in our count described a move that made things worse, which says more about who posts than about the odds. One person on r/bupropion wrote:
I NEEDED a nap midday when I took in the morning.
Why does the label say morning? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
The likely reason is sleep. In the label's trials of Wellbutrin XL for seasonal depression, insomnia affected 20% of people against 13% on placebo. In its trials of the sustained-release form for depression, insomnia affected 11% on 300 mg and 16% on 400 mg, against 6% on placebo, while sleepiness was 2% on 300 mg and 3% on 400 mg, against 2% on placebo. So insomnia shows up at every dose and grows with it, while sleepiness barely differs from placebo.
That sits oddly with r/bupropion, where daytime sleepiness was the top reason for moving the dose. Both can be true: trials count how often something happens across everyone, while people who feel tired are the ones who post about it. The clinical view on timing in general:
Taking your antidepressant at the same time each day matters more than the exact hour.
To change the time, move it gradually over a few days. Some antidepressants need to be taken with food, and food can also ease nausea. If you moved your dose and still feel sleepy in the day, see whether Wellbutrin makes you tired .
What should you ask your prescriber before changing the time?
Ask before you move the dose, and say why you want to. They can tell you whether a different time, dose or form fits better. It helps to tell them:
What time you take it now, and your dose and form. How you sleep, and whether you wake in the night. Whether you feel sleepy or wired during the day. When side effects are worst in the day.

Download on the App Store The time you take Wellbutrin can change how you sleep and how much energy you have. The withClaro app lets you log sleep, energy, mood and dose times each day and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Can I take bupropion SR at night? SR is usually taken more than once a day, so one dose may fall in the evening. MedlinePlus advises keeping it away from bedtime if you have trouble sleeping. Ask your pharmacist how far apart your doses should be.
What happens if I take Wellbutrin too late in the day? It can make it harder to sleep. Note what time you took it and how you slept, and bring that to your prescriber. Don't wait for the appointment if sleep has collapsed, or you feel anxious, agitated or have thoughts of harming yourself: the label asks you to report those right away, especially early on and after a dose change.
Should Wellbutrin be taken with food? The label says with or without food. MedlinePlus says to take it with food if it upsets your stomach; try that before asking about a change of time.
What if I forget my morning dose? Skip the missed dose and take the next one at the usual time. Never take two doses together: the label warns that a higher dose raises the risk of a seizure.
