Key takeaways You can take Lexapro in the morning or the evening, as long as it is at about the same time each day. If Lexapro keeps you awake, a morning dose often helps; if it makes you sleepy, an evening dose often does. On r/lexapro, 57 people said they had moved their dose; of the 34 who said whether it made a difference, 29 said it helped. Move the dose gradually and tell your prescriber if sleep problems or daytime sleepiness last.

What should you tell your prescriber about timing and sleep?
The best time to take Lexapro (escitalopram) is the time that fits how it affects your sleep and energy. The FDA label says to take it once a day, in the morning or the evening, with or without food. The hour does not change how well it works for depression or anxiety, so the choice comes down to side effects.
When 191 people on r/lexapro take their dose
We read 92 recent threads about timing and sleep on r/lexapro, comments included, and 265 people described their own experience. These are people's own accounts rather than trial data, and people who have trouble are more likely to post, so treat this as a range of experiences.
Of the 265, 57 said they had moved their dose: 31 from night to morning and 26 from morning to night. Of the 34 who said whether the move made a difference, 29 said it helped and 5 said it didn't; the other 23 didn't say. There was no single right hour: of 191 people who said when they take it, as many took it in the morning as in the evening, 92 each, and 7 took it in the afternoon.

The reasons ran both ways. Daytime sleepiness came up for 46 people, and trouble sleeping or vivid dreams for 38. One person on r/lexapro wrote:
When I began, took w/breakfast, but it made me sleepy all day. Switched and take with dinner.
Another had the opposite problem:
Tried taking it at night, but I couldn’t sleep. Now I take it in the morning, and it helps wake me up and feel good like a cup of coffee.
Is it better to take Lexapro in the morning or at night?
Neither is better for everyone, because Lexapro can cause both trouble sleeping and sleepiness. In the FDA's depression trials, 9% of adults on Lexapro had insomnia against 4% on placebo, and 6% felt sleepy against 2%. In the anxiety trials, 12% had insomnia against 6% on placebo, and 13% felt sleepy against 7%.
The time matters even though escitalopram stays in the blood for more than a day. Its level peaks about 5 hours after a dose, so the dose time decides whether that peak falls in your day or your night. The label also shows insomnia rising with dose: 4% on placebo, 7% on 10 mg and 14% on 20 mg. So the right time is the one that fits your own reaction. If you notice either effect, ask your prescriber or pharmacist about trying the other time of day.
Sleep changes are among the Lexapro side effects people raise most .
Should you take Lexapro at night if it makes you tired?
For some people, yes, and many on Reddit who moved their dose to the evening for that reason said it helped. It doesn't work for everyone. In a 2010 sleep-lab study, one evening dose of 10 mg disturbed sleep continuity in healthy men, as measured by sleep recordings, even though the men did not rate their sleep as worse. Their alertness the next day was no different from placebo. That was one dose in healthy volunteers, not patients on a course, but it shows that an evening dose can disturb sleep without you noticing, so don't expect the sleepiness simply to move to the night.
Fatigue affected 5% of adults on Lexapro in the depression trials and 8% in the anxiety trials, against 2% on placebo. The NHS lists feeling sleepy among the common side effects and says not to drive or use machinery while you feel it. If tiredness stays heavy whatever the time, tell your prescriber how many days it has lasted, what time you take your dose and what you have tried.
Should you take Lexapro in the morning if it keeps you awake?
Usually, yes. If you lie awake or have vivid dreams after an evening dose, a morning dose often eases it. The NHS says most side effects ease after a couple of weeks as your body gets used to the medicine.
After moving the dose, give the new time a few days before judging the difference. If sleep is still poor after a few weeks, tell your prescriber. Tell them sooner if you can barely sleep at all, or feel wired, restless or agitated.
Is there a best time to take Lexapro for anxiety?
No. The label gives the same once-daily dosing for anxiety and depression, morning or evening. What matters more is a steady routine, because the benefit builds over weeks of daily doses. MedlinePlus advises taking it at around the same time every day.
If your anxiety peaks at night, an evening dose won't calm it on the night itself, and if Lexapro keeps you awake it could make nights harder. Some people feel more jittery in the first days. Note when the jitters come relative to your dose and mention it to your prescriber before moving it.
How the first weeks usually go is covered in how long Lexapro takes to work .
How do you change the time you take Lexapro? Clinical section: medical review pending
Ask your pharmacist or prescriber how to move it. Escitalopram has a half-life of about 27 to 32 hours, so it stays active between doses and a shift of a few hours doesn't leave a gap. If you work shifts or cross time zones, keep a steady gap from when you wake rather than a fixed clock time. The clinical view:
Taking your antidepressant at the same time each day matters more than the exact hour.
To change the time, move it gradually over a few days. Some antidepressants are better taken with food, which can also ease nausea.
What should you tell your prescriber about timing and sleep?
Tell your prescriber when you take Lexapro and how your sleep and energy have been since you started. It helps to tell them:
What time you take your dose, and whether you have moved it. How long it takes you to fall asleep, and whether you wake in the night. Whether you have vivid dreams or feel wired after a dose. How sleepy or tired you feel during the day. Any caffeine, alcohol or sleep aids you use.
Download on the App Store Whether Lexapro keeps you up or makes you drowsy shows up over several days, not one. The withClaro app lets you log sleep, energy, mood and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Can I take Lexapro with food? Yes. The label says you can take it with or without food. Taking it with a meal can ease nausea in the first weeks.
What happens if I take Lexapro at a different time each day? It keeps working, but an irregular routine makes missed doses more likely. Pick one time you can keep, and set a phone reminder.
Can Lexapro cause vivid dreams? It can. In the FDA's anxiety trials, 3% of adults on Lexapro reported abnormal dreams, against 2% on placebo. If dreams disturb your sleep, ask your prescriber about a morning dose.
What should I do if I miss a dose of Lexapro? The NHS says to take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next one. Never take two doses to make up for a missed one.
