Key takeaways In 100 r/lexapro threads, a rough next day and feeling drunk faster were the most common reports, while 37 of 269 people noticed no difference. The FDA label advises against drinking on Lexapro. In a trial, Lexapro did not strengthen the effects of alcohol, but the trial was in healthy volunteers. Skipping a dose to drink does not make drinking safer, and it can bring on withdrawal symptoms. If you do drink, eat first, drink water in between and avoid driving while you feel drowsy, including the next day.

Many people on Lexapro (escitalopram) wonder whether one or two drinks at a wedding or a dinner will undo their progress. Official advice is to skip alcohol. The reasons have less to do with a dangerous reaction and more with mood, sleep and side effects.
What people on r/lexapro say happens when they drink
We read 100 recent threads about drinking on r/lexapro, comments included. Between the posts and the replies, 456 people wrote about drinking on Lexapro themselves, and 269 of them described a specific effect. A hangover or a rough next day came up most, for 70 people. Another 63 had low mood or anxiety the day after.
What people described People A hangover or a rough next day 70 Feeling drunk faster, or on less 68 Low mood or anxiety the next day 63 Blackouts 38 No difference 37 Feeling sick or vomiting 20
One person can appear in more than one row. This is what people say about themselves, not a clinical study, and bad nights get posted more than fine ones. Treat it as what to watch for the first few times you drink, not as your odds.
Of the 456 people, 114 said they now drink less or have stopped, and 18 said they drink more than before. One person on r/lexapro wrote:
I think Lex actually makes the drunkness a little better and my mood is lifted, but yep the next day just isn't worth it.
Is it dangerous to mix Lexapro and alcohol? Clinical section: medical review pending
The FDA label does not describe a dangerous reaction between Lexapro and alcohol. The risk comes from the two adding up: both can make you drowsy and slow your reactions. The NIAAA, the US institute for alcohol research, lists the risks of mixing alcohol with antidepressants. Among them are drowsiness, dizziness and stronger feelings of depression or hopelessness.
The clinical view:
Alcohol is a depressant. It can deepen low mood and anxiety, especially the next day, and that can look like the medication is failing. Together, the two add to drowsiness and slow your reactions, which matters for driving.
If you drink regularly or find it hard to cut down, tell your prescriber. It changes which medication and dose make sense, and it is a conversation they have often.
Does Lexapro lower alcohol tolerance?
Not in the lab. In a clinical trial listed on the FDA label, Lexapro did not make the effects of alcohol on thinking and coordination stronger. That trial was in healthy volunteers, not in people with depression. This is one reason the label still advises against drinking.
People on r/lexapro describe the opposite: 68 of the 269 who described an effect said they got drunk faster or on less. Nobody has measured why. What is known is that escitalopram can make you drowsy, as the label and MedlinePlus both say, and alcohol does too, so the two sedating effects add up. Another commenter put it this way:
One drink feels like nothing to me, but the second will hit 10x harder.
People on Zoloft describe a similar pattern in what happens when you drink on Zoloft .
Can you drink alcohol while taking Lexapro?
US and UK sources word it with different strength. The FDA label says the use of alcohol by patients taking Lexapro is not recommended, and the Medication Guide that comes with the pills is stricter: do not drink alcohol during treatment with Lexapro. The NHS is softer. It says you can eat and drink normally on escitalopram, but it's best not to drink alcohol, as it can increase side effects such as sleepiness. MedlinePlus, from the US National Library of Medicine, says alcohol can make the side effects of escitalopram worse.
That gap is one reason prescribers answer the question differently. Your own prescriber can say what fits your history and the other medicines you take.
Should you skip Lexapro if you plan on drinking?
No. Skipping a dose does not clear the medication from your body in time. Escitalopram has a half-life of about 27 to 32 hours, so a dose taken yesterday is still active today.
With that half-life, one missed dose rarely brings on withdrawal. Skipping or moving doses every weekend is different: it means stopping and restarting again and again, and stopping escitalopram, particularly suddenly, can bring on symptoms such as dizziness, irritability and low mood, the label says. NICE also advises against stopping antidepressants abruptly. If you forget a dose, the NHS advice is to take it when you remember, unless the next one is nearly due.
The symptoms a missed dose can bring are described in Lexapro withdrawal side effects .
Can alcohol make depression worse on Lexapro?
Drinking without skipping your dose still has a cost. A 2011 review found that alcohol use disorder and major depression each roughly double the risk of the other. The authors judged that drinking problems more likely lead to depression than the reverse, though the studies cannot prove cause. The review was about alcohol use disorder in the general population, not about the odd glass of wine and not about people on antidepressants. There are no such data for people taking escitalopram.
While you are on treatment, a bad day after drinking can look like Lexapro has stopped working. If your mood dips after nights out, tell your prescriber about the pattern before deciding the medication has failed.
What should you tell your prescriber about drinking?
The safest first step is to talk it through with your prescriber before you drink. It helps to tell them:
How often you drink, and how much on a typical night. Whether you have skipped or moved a dose around drinking. How your mood, anxiety and sleep were on the days after. Any blackouts. Whether you drink to ease anxiety.
If low mood after drinking turns into thoughts of suicide or self-harm, get help the same day. In the US, call or text 988, or find a crisis line near you .
How can you lower the risk if you do drink?
If you decide to drink before you have spoken to your prescriber, a few steps lower the risk. They come from NHS and NIAAA advice on cutting down, plus the drowsiness warning for escitalopram:
Eat before you drink, and have a glass of water first. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic drinks. Count your drinks and decide your limit before you start. Do not drive if you feel drowsy or dizzy, and that includes the next morning.
Tracking how drinking affects you
Write down the days you drank and roughly how much. Then note your mood, anxiety and sleep on each of the next two days. After a few weeks, that record shows your prescriber whether bad days follow drinking or come on their own.
Download on the App Store Drinks can hit mood and sleep a day or two later, which makes the pattern easy to miss. The withClaro app lets you log mood, energy, sleep and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your doctor.
Frequently asked questions What happens if you drink on Lexapro? Most often, more drowsiness and a lower mood the next day. Some people feel drunk faster, and a few report blackouts.
Does alcohol make Lexapro less effective? The FDA label does not say alcohol weakens escitalopram itself. What it does is deepen low mood and anxiety, especially the next day, which can look like Lexapro has stopped working. Note your mood on the days after drinking and share it with your prescriber.
Can I have an occasional drink while on Lexapro? The FDA label and the NHS both advise against drinking on Lexapro. Some prescribers are fine with an occasional drink, depending on your history. Ask yours directly.
How long after taking Lexapro can I drink alcohol? Spacing them a few hours apart does not separate them. Escitalopram stays active between doses, so changing the time of your dose will not avoid the overlap. Ask your prescriber instead.
I drank last night. Should I still take my Lexapro? Take your usual dose at the usual time unless your prescriber has told you otherwise. Skipping it doesn't undo the drinks, and moving doses around drinking is what turns into a cycle of withdrawal and recovery. If you feel very drowsy or unwell, call your pharmacist or prescriber.
Can I eat grapefruit on Lexapro? The FDA label does not list grapefruit as an interaction for Lexapro. If you take other medications as well, ask your pharmacist to check them together.
