Wellbutrin and Alcohol: Why the Label Says to Limit It
The Wellbutrin label says to minimize or avoid alcohol, because drinking can lower your tolerance and stopping heavy drinking suddenly raises seizure risk.

Key takeaways The FDA label says alcohol should be minimized or avoided on Wellbutrin. Stopping heavy drinking suddenly while on Wellbutrin raises the risk of a seizure. In 100 r/bupropion threads, hangovers, feeling drunk faster and feeling less buzz were the most common reports, and some people had blackouts. If you drink regularly, tell your prescriber before starting Wellbutrin and before cutting down.

The Wellbutrin (bupropion) label says alcohol should be minimized or avoided during treatment. It notes rare reports of reduced alcohol tolerance and mental health side effects in people who drank. MedlinePlus adds that alcohol can make bupropion's side effects worse.
What 407 people on r/bupropion said about drinking
Hangovers, less buzz than usual and feeling drunk faster were what people on r/bupropion described most. We read 100 recent threads about alcohol there, comments included, and 407 people described their own experience. These are people's own accounts, not how often anything happens, and people with a bad night are more likely to post, so treat this as a range of experiences rather than odds.
Of the 407, 253 said what drinking on Wellbutrin was like. The table counts those 253, and one person can appear in more than one row:
What people reported Of 253 people Hangover 88 Less buzz than usual 74 Felt drunk faster 68 Blackout or memory gaps 30 Anxiety or low mood the next day 29 No difference 29 Sick or vomiting 21
Not everyone had a bad time: 29 people noticed no difference. Separately, 115 of the 407 said whether their drinking changed, and 99 of them had cut down or stopped. One person on r/bupropion wrote:
2 drinks felt like I had a lot
Why is alcohol a seizure risk on Wellbutrin?
Bupropion makes a seizure easier to set off, and the higher the dose, the more so. Seizures are uncommon: in studies of the sustained-release form at up to 300 mg a day, about 1 in 1,000 people had one, and about 4 in 1,000 on the immediate-release form at 300 to 450 mg.
Ending heavy drinking abruptly does the same, so the risk comes from the two landing together. The label goes further than a warning: Wellbutrin XL is contraindicated, meaning it should not be used, in people who are abruptly stopping alcohol, and it lists excessive alcohol use among the conditions that raise seizure risk.
MedlinePlus says that if you drink large amounts and expect to stop suddenly, your doctor will probably tell you not to take bupropion. A past seizure, head injury or eating disorder adds to the risk as well.
People with alcohol-related liver disease clear bupropion's main active metabolite more slowly: in a label study its half-life was about 32 hours against 21 in healthy volunteers. That is one more reason to tell your prescriber how much you usually drink.
What should you do if someone has a seizure on Wellbutrin?
A seizure is an emergency. If someone has a seizure, collapses or cannot be woken, call 911 in the US, or your local emergency number, straight away. After a seizure, the FDA label says to stop Wellbutrin and not restart it. Call the prescriber before the next dose is due.
How does alcohol affect your mood on Wellbutrin? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
Bupropion's main risk with alcohol is the seizure, but the day after matters too. Bupropion is not a sedating antidepressant, yet MedlinePlus warns it can make you drowsy, and alcohol makes its side effects worse. The day after is often when people judge whether their medication is working. The clinical view:
Alcohol slows the brain down. It can deepen low mood and anxiety, especially the next day, and that can look like the medication is failing. Together, the two add to drowsiness and slow your reactions, which matters for driving.
If you drink or use cannabis regularly, including CBD or prescribed cannabis, or find it hard to cut down, tell your prescriber. It changes which medication and dose makes sense, and it is a conversation they have often. ## Should you skip Wellbutrin if you plan to drink?
No. Skipping a dose does not clear bupropion from your body in time. Bupropion and its active metabolites have half-lives of about 20 to 37 hours, so yesterday's dose is still working today. If you do miss a dose, the label says not to take an extra one to make up for it, because a higher dose raises seizure risk.
How can you lower the risk if you do drink?
If you drink heavily most days, do not stop suddenly on your own; tell your prescriber first, because stopping abruptly while on Wellbutrin is the situation the label rules out.
If you decide to drink before you have spoken to your prescriber, a few steps lower the risk. They come from NHS and NIAAA advice on cutting down:
Count your drinks and decide your limit before you start. Eat before you drink, and have a glass of water first. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic drinks. Do not drive if you feel drowsy or dizzy, and that includes the next morning.
What should you tell your prescriber about alcohol and Wellbutrin?
Tell your prescriber honestly how much and how often you drink. It changes how safe Wellbutrin is for you and how to plan any change. It helps to tell them:
How many drinks you have in a usual week. Whether you plan to cut down or stop drinking. Any seizure, head injury or eating disorder in the past. What happened when you drank on Wellbutrin. Other medications or substances you use.
If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123. Elsewhere, find a crisis line near you .
Download on the App Store Alcohol on Wellbutrin can change your mood and sleep for days after. The withClaro app lets you log mood, energy, sleep and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Can you drink on Wellbutrin? The label says to minimize or avoid alcohol. Before you drink, tell your prescriber how much you usually have in a week and whether you plan to cut down.
Can one drink on Wellbutrin cause a seizure? The label's warning is about heavy drinking and stopping it suddenly, not one drink. If you have had a seizure, a head injury or an eating disorder, mention it to your prescriber, because these add to the risk.
Why do I get drunk faster on Wellbutrin? The label notes rare reports of reduced alcohol tolerance. Note how many drinks it took and how you felt the next day, and bring that to your next appointment.
How long after drinking can I take Wellbutrin? Taking your dose at a different time does not separate it from the alcohol, because bupropion stays active between doses. Take it at your usual time and ask your prescriber how much drinking is safe for you.
