Key takeaways Wellbutrin XL usually starts at 150 mg once a day in the morning and can go up to 300 mg after 4 days for depression. Seizure risk rises with the dose. The Wellbutrin XL label sets 300 mg as the target and names 450 mg as the limit for seizure risk; going above 300 mg is a prescriber's decision. In 100 r/bupropion threads, 300 mg was the dose people named most often, followed by 150 mg. XL is taken once a day in the morning; other forms of bupropion are taken more than once a day.

Bupropion XL (Wellbutrin XL) usually starts at 150 mg once a day in the morning. For depression, the FDA label allows an increase to the target dose of 300 mg after 4 days. For seasonal depression, the increase comes after 7 days.
What is the usual bupropion XL dose?
The usual dose is 150 mg to start and 300 mg as the target, and tablets come only in 150 mg and 300 mg. Many people stay on 150 mg if it works and the side effects are mild; the label says the increase to 300 mg may happen after 4 days, not that it must. The label also asks prescribers to check the dose from time to time during long-term treatment.
Situation Dose in the label Starting dose, depression 150 mg once a day Usual target, depression 300 mg once a day Seasonal depression 150 mg, then 300 mg after 7 days Stopping from 300 mg, any condition down to 150 mg first Moderate or severe liver problems 150 mg every other day Kidney problems lower dose or less often
Why does the Wellbutrin dose matter for seizures? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
The risk of a seizure rises with the dose. In studies of the sustained-release form at up to 300 mg a day, about 1 in 1,000 people had a seizure. On the immediate-release form at 300 to 450 mg a day it was about 4 in 1,000, and the risk rose almost tenfold between 450 mg and 600 mg.
The Wellbutrin XL label gives two numbers, both for XL. Its seizure warning says the dose should not exceed 300 mg once a day; its summary and the same warning add that the risk can be reduced by not going above 450 mg and raising the dose gradually. Read together, 300 mg is the target dose and 450 mg the limit for seizure risk. Any dose above 300 mg is set by a prescriber, who watches for side effects.
Bupropion is not prescribed to people with a seizure disorder, or with anorexia or bulimia now or in the past, because seizures were more common in them. If either applies to you, your prescriber needs to know before the first dose. The clinical view:
Whether a dose is low or high depends on the medication's usual range and on you.
The same dose can be a starting dose for one person and a full dose for another. Age, individual conditions, other medications and how your body processes the drug all play a part.
Doses usually start low and rise in steps, to keep early side effects manageable. A dose goes up when there has been time to judge the response and the benefit is not enough.
Going above the maximum in the prescribing information is a specialist decision. Changing your dose on your own, or taking extra on a bad day, can bring side effects or withdrawal. ## What dose 207 people on r/bupropion said they take
We read 100 recent threads about Wellbutrin doses on r/bupropion, comments included, and 256 people wrote about their own dose. These are people's own accounts, not checked prescriptions, and people who notice a big change are more likely to post. Of the 256, 207 named their daily dose: 100 took 300 mg and 64 took 150 mg, and a few named other doses, such as 75 mg.
Daily dose Of 207 people 100 mg 8 150 mg 64 200 mg 7 300 mg 100 450 mg 24
Doses of 100 and 200 mg are the SR or immediate-release forms. Of the 256, 77 said their dose had been raised. Among the 32 who said what happened next, 13 felt better, 7 noticed no difference, 4 felt worse at first and then better, and 8 felt worse.
One person on r/bupropion wrote:
Once I started the 300, the depression lifted immediately
Another described a rougher start:
My anxiety spiked for the first couple days after increasing and I almost went back down but fought through those couple days and I’m glad I did.
What is the difference between Wellbutrin SR and XL?
The difference is how often you take it. XL is taken once a day in the morning; SR is usually taken twice a day, for the same total daily dose. They release bupropion at different speeds, which is why the schedules differ. Depending on the form, bupropion is taken one to four times a day, MedlinePlus says, so check how often your form is taken with your pharmacist. When switching between forms, the label keeps the same total daily dose where possible. MedlinePlus advises not taking bupropion too close to bedtime because it can disturb sleep.
What should you ask your prescriber about your Wellbutrin dose?
Dose decisions are easier with a clear account of how the current dose is going. Note how you feel on the dose you take now and for how long, before asking about a change. It helps to ask or tell them:
how long you have been on the current dose which symptoms have improved and which have not how you sleep, and whether anxiety rose after an increase whether you have ever had a seizure, a head injury or an eating disorder what the plan is if the next dose doesn't help
In the two weeks after an increase, note your sleep, anxiety and energy each day. The label warns that suicidal thoughts can appear when a dose changes, most of all in people aged 24 and younger. If they appear, or you feel suddenly agitated or cannot sleep, call your prescriber that day. In a crisis, contact emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123. Elsewhere, find a crisis line near you .
When the time comes to stop, the label steps the dose down first. More on that in Wellbutrin withdrawal .

Frequently asked questions What is the maximum dose of Wellbutrin? The Wellbutrin XL label sets 300 mg once a day as the target and names 450 mg as the limit for seizure risk. Any dose above 300 mg is a prescriber's decision; if yours suggests one, ask how they will watch for side effects.
Can Wellbutrin XL be split or crushed? No. Extended-release tablets are swallowed whole. Ask your pharmacist if swallowing them is hard.
Is 150 mg of Wellbutrin enough? For some people, yes. The label's usual target for depression is 300 mg, but the increase is optional. Tell your prescriber which symptoms have eased on 150 mg and which have not.
What if I miss a dose of Wellbutrin? The label says not to take an extra tablet to make up for it, because a higher dose raises seizure risk. Take the next dose at the usual time, and if you miss doses often, ask your pharmacist about reminders.
