Key takeaways In a 2005 analysis of seven trials, Wellbutrin (bupropion) and SSRIs like Zoloft had the same remission rate for depression, 47%. Zoloft is approved for several anxiety disorders and Wellbutrin for none, while Wellbutrin causes fewer sexual side effects and slightly less weight gain. In 100 Reddit threads that mention both, 42 of 250 people named sexual side effects on Zoloft, and 23 said Wellbutrin made them more anxious or on edge. People with a clear problem post more. The choice depends on your main symptoms and the side effects that matter most to you.

Wellbutrin (bupropion) and Zoloft (sertraline) work similarly for depression on average, but they act on different brain chemicals and feel different. Zoloft is an SSRI that is also approved for several anxiety disorders. Wellbutrin acts mainly on dopamine and noradrenaline and tends to be more energizing. Some people take both.
What do people on Reddit say about Wellbutrin vs Zoloft?
Sexual side effects and calmer anxiety on Zoloft, edginess and more energy on Wellbutrin
On Zoloft, people most often named sexual side effects (42 of 250) and calmer anxiety (36). On Wellbutrin, they most often named feeling more anxious or on edge (23) and more energy (20). Most were on both drugs together, because we picked threads that mention both. These are people's own accounts, not trial scales, and people with a clear problem or a clear win post more than those with neither.
We read 100 recent Reddit threads that mention both medications, comments included, mostly from r/zoloft, r/bupropion and r/antidepressants. Between the posts and the replies, 250 people described their own experience, and 215 said which of the two they took.
What they took Of 215 people Both together 137 Zoloft only 49 One, then switched to the other 15 Wellbutrin only 14
The next two tables put each change under the drug the person said caused it, including people on both, so only people who took a drug could name it; the numbers are out of all 250. One person can be in several rows, and the two tables are not a like-for-like score: more people here took Zoloft. Our count did not record how the combination itself went for the 137 on both.

On Wellbutrin Of 250 people Anxiety got worse or felt on edge 23 More energy 20 Sexual side effects eased 10 Trouble sleeping 8
One person wrote about Zoloft:
currently taking 100mg Zoloft which has killed the anxiety
Another wrote about Wellbutrin:
I definitely felt more on edge when I started Wellbutrin
Can you take Wellbutrin and Zoloft together?
Yes, under a prescriber's care. Prescribers sometimes add Wellbutrin to an SSRI when depression has only partly lifted, or to offset tiredness or sexual side effects. In the 2006 STAR*D trial, people whose depression had not lifted on citalopram, another SSRI, added sustained-release bupropion or buspirone. About 3 in 10 reached remission either way, 29.7% and 30.1%; bupropion's edge was that fewer people stopped it because of side effects, 12.5% against 20.6%.
The combination needs watching. Bupropion can raise sertraline levels through a liver enzyme, so the sertraline dose may need lowering. Seizure risk comes mainly from bupropion and rises with its dose; the Zoloft label only asks for caution in people with a seizure disorder. In the first weeks on both, note your energy, anxiety, sleep and sex drive each day, and bring the notes to your prescriber.
Which is better for depression, Wellbutrin or Zoloft?
About half of people did not reach remission on either, and that shapes the choice. A 2005 analysis of seven trials compared Wellbutrin with SSRIs: fluoxetine, sertraline and paroxetine, with sertraline about half of that group. Remission rates were 47% for both, against 36% on placebo. That is why prescribers may suggest a second try or a combination.
So the better choice is often the one whose side effects suit you. Think about which symptoms bother you most, such as low energy or anxiety, before your next appointment.
Which is better for anxiety?
Zoloft has the edge for anxiety disorders. It is FDA-approved for panic disorder, social anxiety, PTSD and OCD, while Wellbutrin is not approved for any anxiety disorder.
For depression with a lot of anxiety, the difference is small. A 2008 pooled analysis of 10 studies looked at 1,275 people with depression and high anxiety, comparing bupropion with SSRIs as a group. The response rate was 65.4% on SSRIs and 59.4% on bupropion. The authors worked out that about 17 people would need an SSRI instead of bupropion for one extra to respond, which they judged too small to be clinically meaningful. Wellbutrin can also feel stimulating at first: on Reddit, 23 people said their anxiety rose or they felt on edge on it. If anxiety is your main symptom, say so when choosing.
How do Wellbutrin and Zoloft compare on side effects?
The biggest difference is sexual side effects. In the 2005 trial analysis, SSRIs caused more sexual side effects than Wellbutrin, which caused no more than placebo. A 2002 US study of 6,297 people found sexual problems in 22% of people on immediate-release bupropion and 25% on the sustained-release form. The study gave no separate figure for sertraline: across the SSRIs it covered (citalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline), mirtazapine and venlafaxine XR, the rates were 36% to 43%.
Weight differs, but only slightly. A 2024 US study of 183,118 people compared common antidepressants with sertraline itself. The study used medical records rather than a trial, and only 28% to 41% were still taking their drug at six months. People on bupropion gained about 0.22 kg less over six months, a difference the authors call small, and had a 15% lower risk of gaining at least 5% of body weight. For more on weight on sertraline, see does Zoloft cause weight gain .
In trials, SSRIs caused more sleepiness and diarrhea, and Wellbutrin more dry mouth and trouble sleeping.
Wellbutrin can cause seizures, and the risk rises with the dose. It is also ruled out for people with a seizure disorder or with anorexia or bulimia, now or in the past. If either applies to you, that settles the choice before side effects come into it.
How do prescribers choose between Wellbutrin and Zoloft? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
For this pair, the differences that usually decide it are approved uses (Zoloft for several anxiety disorders, Wellbutrin for none), how they feel (Wellbutrin more activating, Zoloft more often tiring), sexual side effects, and seizure risk, which rules Wellbutrin out for some people. Pregnancy plans matter too, since the two drugs have different pregnancy data.
No antidepressant is the strongest for everyone, and the right one is often found by trying.
In large comparisons most antidepressants work similarly on average, with only modest differences between them. They differ more in side effects, interactions and how hard they are to stop. Needing a second choice does not mean the first was a mistake.
Prescribers look at your main symptoms, other conditions, other medications and past response, yours or a close relative's. Some antidepressants are more activating and others more sedating, which can be matched to problems with sleep or energy.
If you move from one medication to another, switching antidepressants explains the usual approaches.
What should you ask your prescriber when choosing between them?
Tell your prescriber which symptoms matter most and which side effects you most want to avoid. That steers the choice more than any average from a trial. It helps to raise:
Whether anxiety, low energy or poor sleep is your main problem. How you feel about possible sexual side effects or weight change. Any history of seizures, eating disorders or heavy drinking. What you have taken before and how it went. Whether adding a second medication might help more than switching.
If you have thoughts of suicide or self-harm, call your prescriber the same day. If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123. Elsewhere, find a crisis line near you .
Download on the App Store Energy, anxiety, sleep and sex drive can move in different directions on Wellbutrin and Zoloft. The withClaro app lets you log mood, energy, sleep and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Is Wellbutrin or Zoloft better for weight? Only slightly. Weight differences were small in a large study. If weight matters to you, or you have had an eating disorder, raise it when choosing.
Is Wellbutrin or Zoloft better for energy? Wellbutrin tends to be more energizing. In our Reddit count, 20 of 250 people named more energy on Wellbutrin and 24 named tiredness on Zoloft. If fatigue is a main symptom, mention it to your prescriber.
Which has fewer sexual side effects? Wellbutrin. If sexual side effects are already a problem on Zoloft, a prescriber may weigh adding or switching to bupropion. If they are a concern, say which part, desire, arousal or orgasm, matters most to you.
Can you switch from Zoloft to Wellbutrin? Yes, but switching should be planned with your prescriber, since stopping Zoloft can bring withdrawal symptoms. Ask how the change will be timed for you.
