Does Zoloft make you sleepy? It can, and Zoloft (sertraline) can bring two different kinds of tiredness. Sleepiness is wanting to doze off; fatigue is running out of energy while awake. Both are on the FDA label's list of common side effects. Our Reddit count didn't separate the two.
How tiredness on Zoloft went for people on r/zoloft
We read 98 recent threads on r/zoloft, comments included, and 263 people described their own experience. These threads were picked because people posted about tiredness, so nearly everyone in them was tired; that says nothing about how often it happens. They are people's own impressions, not trial scales, and people for whom it passed quietly post less.
Of the 263, 251 said Zoloft left them tired, and 99 of them said how it went over time: 48 said the tiredness faded while they stayed on Zoloft and 51 were still tired when they wrote. Of the 251, 65 said what helped, and one person can be in more than one row:
What they said helped Of 65 people Waiting it out 23 Taking the dose in the evening 17 Caffeine, exercise or routine 6 A lower dose 3 Switching to another medication 2 Something else 17
One person on r/zoloft wrote:
It helped to take it in the evening but when then I was still tired during the day. It's been about 2-3 days (so around 10th-11th day) now since the exhaustion seems to be mostly gone
Another kept moving the dose:
as soon as I noticed the intense , heavy, sleepiness, I would basically switch it to the morning or nighttime and hold on for a few months
How common is tiredness on Zoloft?
Common, though far less than our Reddit count suggests. In the label's trials, pooled across depression, OCD, panic disorder, PTSD, social anxiety and PMDD with 3,066 adults on Zoloft, 11% felt drowsy, against 6% on placebo, and 12% felt fatigued, against 8%. In the depression trials, drowsiness was among the side effects at least twice as common as on placebo.
Some people get the opposite. In the same trials, 20% had insomnia, against 13% on placebo.
Why does Zoloft make you sleepy?
Zoloft blocks the reuptake of serotonin from the first dose, and serotonin is involved in sleep and wakefulness, but the label doesn't explain why some people get drowsy and others get insomnia. What is clear is that the medicine is only one of the causes. Depression and anxiety drain energy on their own, poor sleep adds to it, and side effects tend to arrive before any change in mood, which is why the first weeks can feel heavy.
That is why tiredness that lasts is worth raising rather than putting down to the pill, and why a prescriber may also check for other causes.
How long does tiredness from Zoloft last?
On r/zoloft, the 22 people whose tiredness faded and who gave a time most often put it at about 4 weeks. Of the 99 who said how it went, about half were still tired when they wrote. The NHS says most side effects of sertraline ease after a couple of weeks, but some can last longer.
If tiredness is still strong after a month, or starts after a dose increase, tell your prescriber.

What helps with tiredness on Zoloft? Clinical section: medical review pending
After waiting, moving the dose to the evening was what people on Reddit named most. The NHS says to take Zoloft once a day at the same time, morning or evening, so moving it is a change of routine to agree on with your prescriber. The clinical view:
Tiredness is common in the first weeks of an antidepressant and often eases as your body adjusts.
When it lasts, it can come from the medication, from depression itself or from poor sleep.
What can help:
taking the dose in the evening, if your medication allows it regular sleep, daylight and light activity, rather than extra caffeine being careful about driving until you know how the medication affects you
Tell your prescriber if tiredness lasts beyond the first weeks or comes with low motivation and feeling flat. A lower dose or a different medication can help.
How to move your dose time is covered in whether to take Zoloft in the morning or at night .
Is it safe to drive if Zoloft makes you drowsy?
Not while you feel drowsy. The NHS says not to drive, ride a bike or use machinery if you feel dizzy or drowsy after taking sertraline.
Alcohol makes drowsiness worse, as covered in drinking on Zoloft .
What should you tell your prescriber about tiredness?
Tell your prescriber when the tiredness started, how strong it is and whether it is getting better, and ask what else could be adding to it. It helps to tell them:
When you started Zoloft, your dose and any recent dose change. When in the day you feel tired, and whether you take your dose in the morning or evening. How you sleep at night, and whether you nap. Whether you also feel flat, unmotivated or low. Any other medications, caffeine or alcohol you use.
Don't wait for the next visit if tiredness comes with a sharp drop in mood or thoughts of harming yourself; contact your prescriber the same day. If thoughts of harming yourself come, get help right away: in the US, call or text 988; in the UK, call NHS 111 or 999; elsewhere, find a crisis line near you .
Download on the App Store Tiredness on Zoloft rises and fades over weeks, so a day-to-day record shows the pattern better than memory. The withClaro app lets you log energy, sleep, mood and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Does Zoloft tiredness go away on its own? For many people it does, but on r/zoloft about half of those who said how it went were still tired when they wrote. If it lasts beyond a month, or you are napping or cutting back on things, tell your prescriber.
Does a higher dose of Zoloft make you more tired? It can for some people. Tiredness can appear or get stronger after a dose increase. Note when it started and tell your prescriber.
Can Zoloft cause insomnia instead? Yes. In the trials, insomnia was more common than drowsiness. If an evening dose keeps you awake, ask your prescriber about a morning dose.
Is Zoloft or Lexapro more likely to make you sleepy? Both can, and the labels can't settle it. Lexapro's label gives 6% against 2% on placebo in depression trials and 13% against 7% in anxiety trials, while Zoloft's figure pools six conditions, so the numbers aren't like for like. If drowsiness is the side effect you most want to avoid, raise it when your prescriber chooses a medication.
