Drinking on Zoloft: What People Notice and What the Label Says
The FDA label tells people on Zoloft not to drink. Here is what people notice when they do, why skipping a dose backfires and how to lower the risk.

Key takeaways In 100 r/zoloft threads about drinking, feeling drunk faster and a rough hangover were the most common reports. The FDA medication guide for Zoloft says not to drink alcohol while taking it; the NHS says it's best not to, and MedlinePlus says to ask your doctor. Skipping a dose to drink does not clear sertraline from your body, and skipping doses every weekend can bring on withdrawal symptoms. If you drink before you have talked it through with your prescriber, eat first, alternate with water and set a limit before you start.

Many people on Zoloft (sertraline) wonder whether a few drinks at a party will undo their progress. Official advice is to avoid alcohol, though sources word it with different force. The main risks are drowsiness, slower reactions, a lower mood in the days after and a harder time telling whether the medication is working. They matter most for people under 25, for whom the label carries a warning about suicidal thoughts, and for anyone who already finds it hard to control how much they drink.
What 279 people on r/zoloft said happens when they drink
We read 100 recent threads about drinking on r/zoloft, comments included, and 279 people described what drinking on Zoloft was like for them. Feeling drunk faster was the change they named most, by 100 of 279, while 44 noticed no difference. These are people's own accounts online, not how often it happens in everyone on Zoloft, and bad nights get posted more than fine ones. One person could describe several changes:
What people described Of 279 people Feeling drunk faster, or on less 100 A hangover or a rough next day 82 Anxiety or low mood the next day 49 No difference 44 Blackouts 28 Feeling sick or vomiting 28
One person on r/zoloft described the most common change simply:
I do get drunk quicker though.
For others, the next days were the harder part. Another person wrote:
I also wake up with a lil more of hangover and some more anxiety the day after.
And for some, nothing changed:
I haven’t noticed a difference in tolerance or alcohol making me feel any sicker.
Of 130 people on r/zoloft who said whether their drinking changed, 101 now drink less or have stopped, 17 drink more than before and 12 drink about the same.
Why do people get drunk faster or black out on Zoloft?
Nobody has explained it. In a controlled study in healthy people, described in the label, Zoloft did not strengthen the short-term effects of alcohol on thinking and coordination. Yet 100 of 279 people on r/zoloft say they get drunk faster. What the label does say is that Zoloft can cause sleepiness and affect decisions, clear thinking and reaction time, as alcohol does. Blackouts, meaning memory gaps while drunk, came up for 28 people; they raise the risk of falls, injuries and risky choices. If you have had a blackout on Zoloft, tell your prescriber at the next visit, and drink much less or not at all until then. If someone can't be woken, is breathing slowly or is vomiting while barely conscious, call 911.
People on Lexapro describe much the same, as covered in Lexapro and alcohol .
Can you drink alcohol while taking Zoloft? Clinical section: medical review pending
The sources differ in how strongly they put it. The FDA medication guide for Zoloft says: do not drink alcohol while you take Zoloft. The NHS says it's best not to drink while taking sertraline, because alcohol can stop the medicine working properly. MedlinePlus says to ask your doctor about drinking and that alcohol can make sertraline's side effects worse. Any exception to that advice is one to agree with your prescriber, given your history, before the next occasion.
The risks are real even when nothing dramatic happens that night. The NIAAA, the US institute for alcohol research, lists drowsiness and dizziness for alcohol with any depression medication, and stronger feelings of depression or hopelessness. The clinical view:
Alcohol is a depressant. It can deepen low mood and anxiety, especially the next day, and that can look like the medication is failing. Together, the two add to drowsiness and slow your reactions, which matters for driving.
If you drink regularly or find it hard to cut down, tell your prescriber. It changes which medication and dose make sense, and it is a conversation they have often.
Should you skip Zoloft if you plan on drinking?
No. Skipping a dose does not clear sertraline from your body in time. Its half-life is about 26 hours, so a dose taken yesterday is still active today.
One missed dose is unlikely to bring on withdrawal, but it doesn't clear the alcohol risk either. Skipping doses every weekend is different: it means stopping and restarting again and again, and the label links stopping, particularly abruptly, with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea and irritability. Take your dose as usual, and talk to your prescriber about drinking instead.
The symptoms a missed dose can bring are described in Zoloft withdrawal side effects .
Can drinking make depression worse on Zoloft?
It can, though the strongest evidence is about heavy drinking. A 2011 review of studies on alcohol use disorders and major depression found that having either one roughly doubles the risk of the other, and that alcohol problems more likely drive depression than the reverse. That review was about alcohol use disorders, not occasional drinks, and not about people on sertraline. For a few rough days after a night out, there is no data of that kind, but on treatment such a dip can look like Zoloft has stopped working.
If your mood dips after nights out, tell your prescriber about the pattern before deciding the medication has failed.
What should you tell your prescriber about drinking?
The safest first step is to talk it through before you drink. It helps to tell them:
How often you drink, and how much on a typical night. Whether you have skipped or moved a dose around drinking. How your mood, anxiety and sleep were on the days after. Any blackouts. Whether you drink to ease anxiety.
If low mood after drinking turns into thoughts of suicide or self-harm, get help the same day. In the US, call or text 988, or find a crisis line near you .
How can you lower the risk if you do drink?
If you decide to drink before you have spoken to your prescriber, a few steps lower the risk. They come from NHS advice on cutting down, plus the drowsiness warning for sertraline:
Eat before you drink, and have a glass of water first. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water or other non-alcoholic drinks. Set a limit on how much you will drink before you start. Do not drive if you feel drowsy or dizzy, and that includes the next morning.
Download on the App Store Drinking can hit mood and sleep a day or two later, which makes the pattern easy to miss. The withClaro app lets you log mood, energy, sleep and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your doctor.
Frequently asked questions Can I take sertraline in the morning and drink at night? Moving your dose does not separate the two. Sertraline stays active for more than a day, so it is still in your system in the evening. Ask your prescriber what is safe for you.
How much can I drink on sertraline? There is no safe amount set for people on Zoloft, and the label advises against drinking. If you want to drink at all, ask your prescriber what fits your history.
I drank last night. Should I still take my Zoloft? Take your usual dose at the usual time unless your prescriber has told you otherwise. Skipping it doesn't undo the drinks, and moving doses around drinking is what turns into a cycle of withdrawal and recovery. If you feel very drowsy or unwell, call your pharmacist or prescriber.
What should I do if I drank on Zoloft and feel unwell? Stop drinking, drink water and don't drive. If you feel very drowsy, confused or sick and it isn't easing, or someone can't be woken, get urgent help. Either way, tell your prescriber about it.
