Key takeaways Celexa (citalopram) is FDA-approved for depression in adults, and prescribing it for anxiety is off label. In a 1997 trial of 475 people with panic disorder, citalopram at 20 to 30 mg a day gave the best balance of benefit and side effects; 10 to 15 mg did no better than placebo. In 100 Reddit threads, 26 of the 48 people who said what happened to their anxiety on Celexa said it got better. These are self-reports from people who chose to post, not trial results. The benefit for anxiety builds over several weeks, and the first weeks can feel more anxious.

Celexa for anxiety often helps, with limits. Celexa (citalopram) is an SSRI antidepressant. A 1997 trial found citalopram worked better than placebo for panic disorder; for other types of anxiety, the research covers SSRIs as a group. The benefit builds over weeks and depends on the dose.
What do people on Reddit say about Celexa for anxiety?
About half said their anxiety got better
We read 100 recent Reddit threads about Celexa and anxiety, comments included, mostly from r/Anxiety, r/antidepressants and r/SSRIs, and 118 people described their own experience with Celexa. Of them, 48 said what happened to their anxiety:
What happened to their anxiety Of 48 people Better 26 Partly better 4 Worse at first, then better 2 No change yet 4 It didn't help 6 Worse 6
Of the 89 who said why they took it, some listed more than one reason. We searched for threads about Celexa and anxiety, so this shows who was in our sample, not why people take Celexa:
What they took it for Of 89 people Anxiety 83 Panic attacks or panic disorder 25 Depression 23 OCD 8
These are people's own accounts, not trial scales, and people who struggle are more likely to post, so treat them as a range of experiences, not the odds for you.
One person on Reddit wrote:
Felt much less anxious after a couple of weeks
Another said the change was slower:
While I’ve noticed some improvement in general anxiety, the physical symptoms (especially the shaking) haven’t gone away yet.
If thoughts of harming yourself come in the first weeks, do not wait for the next appointment: contact your prescriber that day, or a crisis line.
Is Celexa approved for anxiety?
Not in the US. The FDA label approves Celexa for major depressive disorder in adults. In the UK, the NHS lists citalopram for depression and panic disorder. Prescribing it for generalized anxiety or social anxiety is off label, which is common practice for SSRIs.
Does Celexa work for anxiety? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
For panic disorder, there is a trial of citalopram itself; for generalized and social anxiety, the evidence is for SSRIs as a class. A 1997 trial of 475 people with panic disorder compared several doses over eight weeks. Citalopram at 20 to 30 mg and at 40 to 60 mg a day worked better than placebo, while 10 to 15 mg did not. The authors found 20 to 30 mg the most effective and the best balance of benefit and side effects. Today the FDA label advises against more than 40 mg a day because of a heart rhythm risk.
For SSRIs as a class, a 2019 analysis of 57 placebo-controlled trials of SSRIs and SNRIs in anxiety disorders, with 16,056 people, found no significant difference in effect between the individual drugs within each class. It found the biggest benefit in social anxiety, and more benefit at higher doses within the usual range, though higher doses also made people more likely to stop because of side effects. So the choice often comes down to side effects, other conditions and past response.
Antidepressants are a first-line medication for most anxiety disorders, alongside talking therapy, and their benefit for anxiety builds over several weeks.
People with anxiety can be more sensitive to early side effects, including a brief rise in anxiety. That is why treatment often starts at a low dose and goes up slowly.
How long does Celexa take to work for anxiety?
Expect a few weeks before anxiety clearly eases. The NHS says you may need to take citalopram for a few weeks before you notice an improvement. In the 2019 analysis of anxiety trials, SSRIs kept improving symptoms at a steady pace across 12 weeks, rather than mostly in the first weeks.
The FDA label warns that suicidal thoughts can rise in the first weeks and after a dose change in people aged 24 and younger; in older adults the trials didn't show that rise, but the rule to call the same day about such thoughts applies to everyone. A hard second week is not the final answer on whether Celexa works, but thoughts of self-harm always need a same-day call. Keep a short note of how anxious you feel each day, so you and your prescriber can see the trend.

What are the side effects of Celexa?
The most common are nausea, dry mouth and sleepiness. In the FDA's depression trials, 21% of people on Celexa had nausea, against 14% on placebo. Dry mouth affected 20% against 14%, and sleepiness 18% against 10%. Anxiety as a side effect was close to placebo, 4% against 3%, but that is across whole depression trials; the short rise some people with anxiety feel in the first weeks is a different thing.
What dose of Celexa is used for anxiety?
The FDA label starts Celexa at 20 mg once a day, and the usual maximum is 40 mg a day, set by a heart rhythm risk. For some people the maximum is 20 mg, as the table shows. Tell your prescriber about any heart condition or other medications before starting.
Dose in the FDA label Amount Starting dose 20 mg once a day Maximum for most adults 40 mg a day, because of a heart rhythm risk Maximum over 60, with liver problems, for slow CYP2C19 metabolizers or with medicines such as cimetidine 20 mg a day
The label's figures are in its dosing and warnings sections.
What should you ask your prescriber about Celexa for anxiety?
Ask your prescriber why Celexa suits your anxiety, what dose to start on and what to do if the first weeks feel worse. Clear answers make the early weeks easier to sit through. It helps to ask:
Is Celexa a good fit for my type of anxiety, given it is approved for depression? What dose will I start on, and when might it change? What should I do if anxiety rises in the first weeks? How long should I give it before we judge whether it works? Do any of my other medications or health conditions matter with Celexa?
If you have thoughts of suicide or self-harm, call your prescriber the same day. If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123. Elsewhere, find a crisis line near you .
Download on the App Store Anxiety on a new medication rarely improves in a straight line, so good and bad days are hard to weigh. The withClaro app lets you log mood, energy, sleep and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Which is better for anxiety, Celexa or Zoloft? A 2019 analysis of anxiety trials compared SSRIs and SNRIs and found no significant difference in effect between the drugs within each class. Zoloft is FDA-approved for panic disorder and social anxiety, while Celexa is approved for depression. Ask your prescriber which fits your symptoms and history.
Is 10 mg of citalopram enough for anxiety? Some prescribers begin below the label's 20 mg so the first weeks are easier. In the 1997 panic disorder trial, 10 to 15 mg a day did no better than placebo, and the benefit showed from 20 mg. If you have been on 10 mg, tell your prescriber how many weeks it has been and what has changed; for some people, such as those over 60, 20 mg is already the maximum.
Can you take Celexa for anxiety and panic together? Yes, one prescription can cover both, since panic disorder is a type of anxiety disorder. The 1997 trial of citalopram was in people with panic disorder, and the NHS lists it for panic disorder. In our Reddit sample, 25 of the 89 people who said why they took it named panic attacks or panic disorder. Tell your prescriber how often panic attacks come, so you can both see if they ease.
Is Lexapro the same as Celexa? No, but they are close relatives. Lexapro (escitalopram) is a close relative of Celexa and, unlike Celexa, is FDA-approved for generalized anxiety disorder in adults. No trial cited here compared the two head to head, so side effects, other medications and past response usually decide between them. If one did not suit you, tell your prescriber which one and why.
