Key takeaways Buspirone is approved for anxiety disorders, and its trials were in people close to generalized anxiety disorder. Unlike benzodiazepines, the label found no evidence that it causes dependence, but it doesn't work within minutes. In 100 r/buspirone threads, most people who said what happened to their anxiety said it got better. Its trials lasted 3 to 4 weeks, so there is no controlled evidence for longer use; the label asks prescribers to review the benefit from time to time.

Buspar (buspirone) is an anti-anxiety medicine approved for anxiety disorders. It is not a benzodiazepine, and the label found no evidence that it causes dependence. It doesn't calm you within minutes either. Part of the wait is reaching the dose: it is raised no more often than every 2 to 3 days, and MedlinePlus says it may take several weeks to reach a dose that works for you.
What happened to anxiety for 160 people on r/buspirone
We read 100 recent threads about buspirone and anxiety on r/buspirone, comments included, and 316 people described their own experience. These are people's own accounts, not trial scales, and people with a strong result either way post more. Not everyone did well: 26 said it didn't help or made anxiety worse. For another person, it was slower:
It took maybe 5 weeks for me to start feeling a significant difference but everyone has a different response.
What did the Buspar trials show?
Controlled trials showed that buspirone eased anxiety more than placebo over 3 to 4 weeks; the label does not give the size of the effect. The trials were in outpatients whose diagnosis roughly matched generalized anxiety disorder. They had had symptoms for a month to over a year, six months on average, and many also had depressive symptoms, which did not stop buspirone easing their anxiety.
Longer use has not been tested in controlled trials, though in one study 264 people took buspirone for a year without ill effects. So a prescriber who keeps it going long term is asked to review from time to time whether it still helps. The approval is worded broadly, for anxiety disorders and short-term relief of anxiety, while the trials were in people close to generalized anxiety disorder.
How is Buspar different from benzodiazepines and SSRIs? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
How buspirone works is not known. It binds strongly to one type of serotonin receptor, 5-HT1A, and does not act on the benzodiazepine receptor or on GABA, which is why it doesn't sedate, relax muscles or prevent seizures the way Xanax-type drugs do. It is not related to benzodiazepines, and the label found no evidence of tolerance or dependence, while noting that misuse after a drug comes to market is hard to predict from trials. It asks prescribers to watch people with a past drug problem for misuse. It also doesn't ease benzodiazepine withdrawal, so stopping a benzodiazepine needs its own taper.
Compared with SSRIs, buspirone is a narrower tool: SSRIs are used for depression and several anxiety disorders, while buspirone is approved for anxiety only. Neither brings relief within hours. The clinical view on antidepressants for anxiety, which buspirone is not:
Antidepressants are a first-line medication for most anxiety disorders, alongside talking therapy, and their benefit for anxiety builds over several weeks.
People with anxiety can be more sensitive to early side effects, including a brief rise in anxiety. That is why treatment often starts at a low dose and goes up slowly. Buspirone is started low and raised slowly too, every 2 to 3 days at most, and dizziness is among its most common side effects.
What should you tell your prescriber about anxiety on Buspar?
Tell your prescriber how your anxiety has changed and how long you have been on your dose. It helps to tell them:
Your dose and how many times a day you take it. Whether anxiety eased, and what kind: worry, panic or physical symptoms. Dizziness after a dose. Other anxiety medicines, especially benzodiazepines. Whether you also have low mood.
Bring this list to each review, since long-term use is meant to be checked from time to time. Restlessness so strong that you can't sit still is a reason to call sooner: the label lists akathisia and restlessness among reports after approval.

Frequently asked questions Does buspirone work for panic attacks? Its approval covers anxiety disorders in general, but its trials were in people close to generalized anxiety disorder, not panic disorder. If panic is your main problem, tell your prescriber how often attacks come and how long they last.
Is buspirone better than Xanax? They work differently: buspirone takes weeks and showed no dependence in its label, while Xanax works fast but can cause dependence. Tell your prescriber whether you need quick relief or a daily treatment.
Can buspirone make anxiety worse? Some people on r/buspirone said so, and a few said it got worse before it got better. Note when it started relative to a dose change and tell your prescriber; if you feel so restless you can't sit still, call sooner.
Can you take buspirone with an SSRI? Some people do under a prescriber's care, but together they raise the risk of serotonin syndrome, which can be life-threatening. Get emergency care for agitation or confusion with a fast heartbeat, fever, sweating, shaking or stiff muscles.
