The most common Buspar (buspirone) side effects are dizziness, nausea, headache and nervousness. In the FDA trials, dizziness affected 12% of people on buspirone against 3% on placebo. Buspirone is an anti-anxiety medicine, not an antidepressant, and its side effect profile differs from SSRIs: sexual side effects and weight gain are uncommon on it. How long side effects last is less clear, and in our Reddit count many were still going when people posted.
What are the most common side effects of Buspar?
Dizziness, nausea, headache and nervousness, with dizziness furthest ahead of placebo. The label compares 477 people on buspirone with 464 on placebo:
Side effect Buspirone Placebo Dizziness 12% 3% Drowsiness 10% 9% Nausea 8% 5% Headache 6% 3% Nervousness 5% 1% Lightheadedness 3% under 1%
In trials lasting 3 to 4 weeks, about 10% of 2,200 people stopped because of a side effect. The most common reasons were dizziness, insomnia, nervousness, drowsiness and lightheadedness, then nausea, headache and tiredness. Trials that short cannot show which side effects pass and which stay, though in one study 264 people took buspirone for a year without ill effects.
Which side effects do people on r/buspirone name most?
Dizziness and feeling anxious or agitated, named by 57 people each. We read 90 recent threads about side effects on r/buspirone, comments included, and 229 people described their own experience. These are people's own accounts, and people with ongoing problems are more likely to post, so treat this as a range of experiences rather than odds. Of the 229, 184 named at least one side effect, 14 said they had none, and the rest didn't say. The table counts the 184 who named one, and one person can be in several rows:
What they named Of 184 people Dizziness 57 Anxiety or agitation 57 Tiredness or drowsiness 41 Nausea or stomach trouble 32 Trouble sleeping 31 Headache 26
How long do Buspar side effects last?
For some people, weeks; for the rest, our count can't say. Of 70 people on r/buspirone who said how long their side effects lasted, 26 said they eased within weeks and 3 said they lasted months. Another 41 were still going when they posted, so we don't know how long theirs lasted. The label's trials ran only 3 to 4 weeks, so they do not answer this either.
What helps with Buspar side effects?
Of 55 people on r/buspirone who said what helped, a dose change, waiting, the time of day and taking it with food came up most. One person wrote:
Eating with it helps ALOT with the nausea
Food raises how much buspirone reaches the blood, so the label asks you to take it the same way each time, always with food or always without. MedlinePlus advises avoiding large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
When does Buspar dizziness start?
There is no exact explanation: the label says the mechanism is unknown, though buspirone binds strongly to a type of serotonin receptor, 5-HT1A, and moderately to dopamine D2 receptors. People most often describe dizziness in the first hours after a dose, which matches the timing of its peak level, 40 to 90 minutes after taking it.
Which Buspar side effects are serious? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
The label lists suicidal thoughts among infrequent events. If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123. Elsewhere, find a crisis line near you . The label also warns about serotonin syndrome, which can be life-threatening, especially with other serotonin medicines, and says Buspar must not be taken with MAOI antidepressants or within 14 days of one. It mentions movement problems too: restlessness you can't sit still through is listed as infrequent, while muscle stiffness and slowed, Parkinson-like movement come from reports after approval, where a link to buspirone was not established. The clinical view:
Call your prescriber the same day, or get urgent care, if you notice:
- agitation, heavy sweating, fever, muscle twitching or confusion, which can be signs of serotonin syndrome If you notice restlessness you cannot sit still through, stiff or jerking muscles, or new slow, shuffling movement, tell your prescriber without waiting for the next appointment.
What should you tell your prescriber about Buspar side effects?
Tell your prescriber which side effects you have, when they come after a dose and whether they are easing. That helps them tell an early effect that will pass from one worth changing the dose for. It helps to tell them:
When you started Buspar, your dose and how often you take it. Which side effects you have, and how soon after a dose. Whether you take it with food or without. Whether they're easing, steady or getting worse. Other medications you take, including antidepressants.
Download on the App Store Side effects on Buspar can come and go with each dose. The withClaro app lets you log mood, sleep and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Is Buspar addictive? Buspirone is not a controlled substance, and in the label's studies it showed no sign of dependence. The label still asks prescribers to watch people with a past drug problem for misuse. If you want to stop, plan it with your prescriber so your anxiety is covered.
Does Buspar make you sleepy? Drowsiness was about as common as on placebo in the trials, 10% against 9%. If it affects you, note how soon after a dose it comes and avoid driving until you know how buspirone affects you.
Can Buspar cause weight gain? Weight gain is listed only as an uncommon event in the label, and on Reddit few named it. If your weight or appetite changes, note since when and mention it at your next appointment.
Can you drink on Buspar? The label says it is prudent to avoid alcohol with buspirone, and MedlinePlus says not to drink, because alcohol adds to its drowsiness. If you plan to drink, say how much to your prescriber first.
