Key takeaways MedlinePlus says it may take several weeks to reach a buspirone dose that works for you. The label starts at 15 mg a day and allows 5 mg steps every 2 to 3 days, so the common range of 20 to 30 mg can be reached in a week or two. In Reddit threads, the 16 people who said it worked and when it first helped most often named about 4 weeks, a small group to go on. Trouble sleeping, tiredness and a short rise in anxiety were the early side effects named most.

How long Buspar took for 16 people on Reddit
We read 65 recent threads about how long buspirone takes, mostly on r/buspirone, comments included, and 154 people described their own course. These are people's own accounts, and people who are struggling are more likely to post, so treat this as a range of experiences. Of those whose Buspar worked, 16 said when it first helped: the typical answer was about 4 weeks, and half named between 1 and 5 weeks. That is a small group, so treat it as a rough guide; official sources give no time of their own, beyond MedlinePlus saying that reaching the right dose can take several weeks.

Why does Buspar take weeks to work?
Two things take time: building up to the right dose, and the effect itself, which seems to build as the brain responds over weeks. The label says buspirone's mechanism is unknown. It is known to bind strongly to a type of serotonin receptor, 5-HT1A, and unlike benzodiazepines it does not act on their receptors, so it does not calm you within minutes. It reaches the blood within about an hour of a dose, so the wait is not about the pill being slow to absorb.
The dose matters too. The label starts at 15 mg a day, as 7.5 mg twice a day, and allows 5 mg steps every 2 to 3 days. In trials, 20 to 30 mg a day in divided doses was common; with those steps, a prescriber can reach that range within a week or two. Its half-life is about 2 to 3 hours, and the label gives it in divided doses.

Some things change before others, and a few may get worse first. Of 21 people on Reddit who named the first change, less anxiety came up most (15). Of 65 who named an early side effect, 13 named trouble sleeping, 12 tiredness and 12 a rise in anxiety at first. Taking buspirone the same way each day, always with food or always without, keeps how much reaches the blood steady, the label says. The clinical view on the first weeks of a new medicine:
Early signs of progress are often small, and other people may notice them first. Getting out of bed gets easier, you spend less time on the same worries, and old interests come back.
Talk to your prescriber about the dose or a different medication if:
- nothing has improved after about four weeks at a steady dose - side effects are hard to live with A short rise in anxiety at the start came up on Reddit too. If it happens, ask your prescriber whether it is expected at this stage, how long it may last and what can ease it meanwhile.
Some people take buspirone alongside an antidepressant. Buspirone does not prevent benzodiazepine withdrawal, so if you also take a benzodiazepine, don't stop it on your own as buspirone starts working. If thoughts of suicide or self-harm appear while you start either one, call your prescriber the same day. If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123. Elsewhere, find a crisis line near you .
What should you tell your prescriber in the first weeks on Buspar?
Tell your prescriber what has changed so far and what hasn't, with rough dates. It helps to tell them:
When you started and when the dose went up. What changed first: worry, panic, sleep or physical symptoms. Early side effects, such as dizziness or trouble sleeping. How many times a day you take it, and with food or without. Whether anything has improved after about 4 weeks, the typical time on Reddit.

Frequently asked questions Does Buspar work right away? No. It builds up over weeks. If anxiety is hard to manage while you wait, tell your prescriber how much it gets in the way right now and ask what to do in this period.
Why do I feel worse on Buspar at first? Early dizziness, trouble sleeping or a rise in anxiety can come before the benefit. Note when it happens relative to your doses and tell your prescriber.
Should I take Buspar as needed? It's meant to be taken every day, because the effect builds over weeks rather than with each dose. Ask your prescriber before changing how you take it.
What if Buspar hasn't worked after several weeks? Bring what has changed and what has not, your dose and how long you have been on it. Your prescriber can then judge whether more time, a different dose or a different medication fits.
