Does Wellbutrin Make You Tired? Why Some People Feel Exhausted
Wellbutrin is known for energy, and sleepiness was rare in the FDA trials, yet some people feel more tired on it.

Key takeaways In the FDA trials of the sustained-release form, sleepiness and weakness at 300 mg a day were as common as on placebo. In 88 r/bupropion threads about tiredness, most people who wrote said they felt more tired; poor sleep is the most likely route, though our count didn't record the cause. Some people said tiredness eased within the first weeks; others were still tired after weeks. Tell your prescriber if tiredness lasts beyond the first weeks, and sooner if your mood drops or tiredness jumps after a dose increase.

What 173 people on r/bupropion said about tiredness Why can Wellbutrin make you tired? Is it Wellbutrin or depression? What should you tell your prescriber about tiredness on Wellbutrin?
Wellbutrin (bupropion) does not usually make people tired. In the FDA's depression trials of the sustained-release form, sleepiness affected 2% of people on 300 mg a day, the same as on placebo. Weakness was reported by 2% on 300 mg, the same as on placebo, and 4% on 400 mg, a dose higher than the usual XL target. The label counts sleepiness and weakness; it has no separate entry for fatigue, so these figures don't fully answer the question. Some people do feel tired on it, and poor sleep is the most likely route.
What 173 people on r/bupropion said about tiredness
We read 88 recent threads about tiredness on r/bupropion, comments included, and 173 people described their own experience. These threads were chosen because they were about tiredness, and people without it post less, so the numbers show what tiredness looks like when it happens, not how often. Of the 168 who said how their energy changed, 139 felt more tired or low on energy, and 29 said they had more energy.
Of the 139 who felt tired, 42 said how it went over time: 14 said it faded and 28 were still tired. Of the 14 whose tiredness faded, 7 gave a time, too few to name a typical number.
Of the 139 who felt tired, 35 said what they tried; some named things that don't fit these rows. One person can be in more than one row, and our count does not record whether it worked:

Why can Wellbutrin make you tired?
Mostly through sleep, rather than by sedating you the way some antidepressants do. Insomnia was more common on bupropion than on placebo: in the label's trials of Wellbutrin XL for seasonal depression, 20% against 13%, and in trials of the sustained-release form for depression, 11% against 6% at 300 mg. A short night can mean a tired day. MedlinePlus advises not taking it too close to bedtime if you have trouble sleeping.
One person on r/bupropion wrote:
the tiredness left once i switched when i take my meds
That worked for them, but the label gives Wellbutrin XL in the morning, so a change of time is one to agree with your prescriber first.
Is it Wellbutrin or depression? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
Tiredness is also a symptom of depression, so it can be hard to tell which is which, and your prescriber is the one to sort it out. Bring answers to a few questions: when did the tiredness start, before or after the first dose or an increase? Did your sleep change at the same time? Have you lost interest in things you used to enjoy? The clinical view:
When it lasts, it can come from the medication, from depression itself or from poor sleep.
What can help:
- regular sleep, daylight and light activity, rather than extra caffeine - not driving or using machinery if you feel drowsy Tell your prescriber if tiredness lasts beyond the first weeks, or comes with low motivation and feeling flat. Don't wait if your mood is dropping, tiredness jumped after a dose increase, or you have thoughts of harming yourself: call your prescriber. If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line straight away. In the US, call or text 988. In the UK, call Samaritans on 116 123. Elsewhere, find a crisis line near you .
Putting up with it and stopping are not the only two options. What fits depends on your dose, your sleep and your history, and that is a conversation with whoever prescribed it.
What should you tell your prescriber about tiredness on Wellbutrin?
Tell your prescriber how tired you are, when in the day it hits and how you sleep. That helps them tell a sleep problem from a dose problem, and they will likely ask about mood and interest too. It helps to tell them:
When you started Wellbutrin and your dose. What time you take it. How long you sleep and whether you wake in the night. Whether tiredness is new or was there before. How much caffeine you have each day.

Download on the App Store Tiredness on Wellbutrin can come from poor sleep, the dose or depression itself. The withClaro app lets you log sleep, energy, mood and side effects each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Is it normal to feel tired in the first week of Wellbutrin? Some people do, often from poor sleep in the first days. Note what time you take it and how long you slept each night that week.
Can caffeine help with tiredness on Wellbutrin? It may feel like it helps, but caffeine can add to jitteriness and poor sleep, which are common on bupropion. Regular sleep, daylight and light activity are the safer first steps, and tell your prescriber how much caffeine you have.
Is Wellbutrin good for fatigue? Many people feel more energy on it, but it's approved for depression and seasonal depression, not fatigue. If fatigue is your main problem, ask your prescriber whether something else, such as sleep or thyroid, has been checked.
Why am I more tired after going up to 300 mg of Wellbutrin? Side effects can return or grow for a while after an increase, and insomnia is more common at higher doses, which can leave you tired in the day. Note how you have slept since the increase and tell your prescriber.
