Celexa (citalopram) is an SSRI antidepressant, marketed as Celexa in the US and Cipramil in the UK. It is a common first-line treatment for depression. This guide and medication taper calculator help you plan how to taper off citalopram safely with your prescriber.

Dose vs occupancy
This taper is spread across 26 gradual steps. The curve below shows why the last few milligrams matter most: at low doses, small dose changes produce large drops in serotonin-transporter occupancy.
What this shows: the non-linear relationship between dose and serotonin transporter (SERT) occupancy. The curve is flat at high doses — most transporters are already blocked, so a dose cut has little biological impact — and much steeper at low doses, where even a 1–2 mg reduction causes a disproportionately large drop in occupancy. Your taper steps are spaced along this curve so each step removes a similar amount of occupancy.

How to Taper Off Celexa / Cipramil (Citalopram) Safely
How to taper off Celexa (citalopram; Cipramil in the UK) safely usually means a comfortable upper taper and a careful finish: its half-life (~33 hours) is moderate, but transporter occupancy remains high at low milligram doses. Coming off citalopram is best done with a hyperbolic taper schedule and liquid for the final steps, planned with your prescriber.
Citalopram is a racemic SSRI; escitalopram is its S-enantiomer. People looking to wean off Celexa or get off antidepressants often underestimate the last 10 mg. Gradual, occupancy-based reductions follow Horowitz & Taylor (2019), Maudsley (2024), and NICE NG222.
What coming off Celexa actually feels like, week by week
Oversized cuts tend to declare themselves within a few days: dizziness, brain zaps, nausea, irritability, sleep disturbance, and anxiety waves. The top of a citalopram taper is often uneventful, which can create false confidence.
In a well-sized plan each wobble should settle in one to two weeks. Most of the careful work of coming off Celexa sits under 10 mg.

Withdrawal or relapse — how to tell them apart
Citalopram withdrawal is typically early and physical/sensory and eases with reinstatement. Relapse of depression usually emerges weeks later and does not resolve promptly when the dose is briefly restored (Cosci & Chouinard, 2020).
Celexa taper schedules by starting dose (40, 20, 10 mg)
Citalopram comes as 10, 20, and 40 mg tablets plus liquid (US oral solution; UK/EU 40 mg/mL drops — note bioavailability differences: UK drops are more bioavailable, so follow local equivalence). Notes high → low.
From 40 mg: upper steps (40 → 30 → 20) are usually easy. How to taper off Celexa 40 mg is mainly about not rushing the lower third.
From 20 mg: a Celexa taper schedule from 20 mg should shrink toward 15 → 10 before the liquid phase.
From 10 mg: how to taper off citalopram 10 mg means stepping through roughly 8, 5, 3, 1 mg with drops or solution — increments a split tablet cannot reach reliably.
If it gets worse: pausing and reinstatement
Hold or reinstate the last stable dose if symptoms are intolerable; contact your prescriber if mood deteriorates. Reinstatement relief often arrives within one to two days.
Resume with smaller steps once stable. The smoothness of the upper taper is not a reason to accelerate the bottom.
Drops, solution, and small doses of citalopram
