Trazodone is one of the most prescribed medicines for sleep, though it is approved only for depression and sleep experts are cautious about it.

Key takeaways Trazodone is approved for depression; using it for sleep is off-label. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine suggests not using it for chronic insomnia. A 2018 Cochrane review, with searches up to 2015, found a small improvement in how people rated their sleep, close to no effect at the edge of its range, and more morning grogginess than placebo. Of 64 people on Reddit who said how it went, 20 said it worked, 17 partly and 18 not.

Trazodone is widely used for sleep, but it is approved only for depression. For chronic insomnia, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine suggests that clinicians not use it, a weak recommendation based on few studies. A 2018 Cochrane review found a small benefit that it could not be confident about.
Does trazodone work for sleep?
The evidence is thin. The Cochrane review pooled three studies with 370 people and found a small improvement in how people rated their own sleep with short-term use; the margin of error reaches almost to no difference, so a benefit can't be ruled out, but it isn't certain either. In two studies that measured sleep in a lab, trazodone made little or no difference to sleep efficiency. Side effects were more common than on placebo: morning grogginess, more dry mouth and thirst. The review's searches ran to 2015, so newer trials aren't in it.
The AASM guideline's advice against it is for chronic insomnia, compared with no treatment, and it is a weak recommendation; the authors note that weak doesn't mean ineffective.
Did trazodone work for sleep for people on Reddit?
We read 48 recent threads where people discussed whether trazodone worked, mostly on r/insomnia, comments included, and 98 people described their own experience. These are their own accounts, not sleep measurements, and people with a strong result are more likely to post, so treat this as a range of experiences, not a success rate. Of the 98, 64 said plainly how it went, and the answers split almost evenly: 20 said it worked, 17 that it partly worked, 18 that it didn't and 9 that it was too early to tell.

How soon does trazodone work for sleep? Medically reviewed by Dr. Jason Tan on October 27, 2026, this section only.
Usually the same night. Levels peak about an hour after a dose on an empty stomach, or about two hours when taken with food, and the label advises taking it shortly after a meal or light snack. That is the time to peak blood levels, a rough guide rather than when you will feel sleepy. On Reddit, 9 people said it was still too early to tell, so a few nights is not always enough to judge. For depression, MedlinePlus says the full benefit may take 2 weeks or longer.
Antidepressants can pull sleep either way, and trouble sleeping on trazodone is itself a reason to call your prescriber, not to wait. The clinical view on what to do if sleep doesn't settle:
Some cause insomnia, especially early on, while others make you drowsy. Sleep changes often improve over the first weeks.
Tell your prescriber if sleep problems continue, or start during a dose reduction, when they can be a withdrawal symptom. Check before adding sleep aids or supplements, as some interact with antidepressants. ## What should you tell your prescriber about trazodone and sleep?
Tell your prescriber how you sleep now and what you have tried. A sleep diary makes this easier. It helps to tell them:
how long it takes you to fall asleep and how often you wake how you feel the next morning your dose and what time you take it other sleep aids, alcohol or cannabis you use whether low mood or anxiety are part of the picture

Download on the App Store A sleep diary shows whether trazodone is really helping. The withClaro app lets you log sleep, next-day energy and mood each day, linked to your dose, and turns it into a report for your prescriber.
Frequently asked questions Is trazodone safe to take every night for sleep? There is little research on long-term nightly use for sleep, so ask your prescriber about the plan and how long to stay on it. The label's warnings still apply, including new or worse thoughts of self-harm in people under 24, especially in the first months and after a dose increase, dizziness or fainting on standing, heart rhythm problems and, in men, a prolonged erection that needs emergency care.
Why isn't trazodone recommended for insomnia? The AASM guideline advises against it for chronic insomnia because the data on it are few and mixed. Its recommendation is labeled weak, which the authors say does not mean the drug doesn't work. Ask your prescriber how it fits your case.
Can trazodone stop working for sleep? Some people on Reddit said it did. Tell your prescriber if your sleep gets worse again.
Can I take trazodone with melatonin? Both make you sleepy, and the trazodone label warns it can strengthen other medicines that slow the brain, so the drowsiness can add up. The same AASM guideline also suggests not using melatonin for chronic insomnia, so ask your prescriber what each one would add for you.
